Any one know if the Ruger 45 Colt cylinder is the same length as the 454 cylinder? I have the Bisley 45 Colt along with the ACP cylinder and my silly brain is trying to justify buying the 454 if I could use those both cylinders. I do know I can use the 454 for 45 Colt.

the cylinders for the .454s are longer than the .45 Colt/ACP cylinders

Take a look at the cartridge dimensions on the .454 (google the cartridge on Wikipedia) and you'll see it's longer than the 45 Colt (which is the "parent cartridge") - thus it needs a longer cylinder. Sort of like the 38 spl. and 357 magnum. You can shoot a 38 spl. in a 357 mag cylinder but you can't shoot a 357 mag in a 38spl. (i.e. a revolver designed for the 38 spell.) as the 357 is too long.

From my limited understanding of the .454, you can shoot a 45 Colt in a revolver designed for the 454 but the 454 is too long to fit in a cylinder designed for a 45 Colt - which is a "good thing" since the 454 is such a high pressure cartridge.

The cylinder is longer due in part to the fact that Ruger elected to have recessed chambers to provide better support to the loading gate under recoil much the way Freedom Arms does. The cylinder window in the frame is the same size, but the cylinder is longer. The other issue is that the 454 is a 5 shot, and as such, the timing would be all wrong for a 6 shot 45 Colt cylinder. I will say, I can chamber 300gr jacketed 454 loads in my 5 1/2" SS Bisley in 45 Colt, was surprised to say the least, but as I don't bring it and the Freedom Arms out at the same time, no worries about a mix up.
