I know I don't need it, but I no longer have a .30/06

There is only one thing I want you to do...

Talk me out of it..;)

Perhaps I should save my money and buy a pre64 Model 70 .30/06

I have a soft spot for the 06, because the biggest deer I ever killed was with that caliber..

The last 06 I owned as an old win 95..

I like the #1's but I really don't think I will buy another one right now..

Thanks anyway.

I do like the 06.I believe it is the all around caliber for hunting...
but in reality my hunting days are over.
I need to focus on competition only..

If I could only choose one hunting rifle it would be the 06..
If I could have two it would be the .375 H&H..

The .308 win is my all time favorite caliber..for hunting or target..
I guess I evolved into the .308 from everything else.

When I was a teenager (a loooooong time ago) I mowed lawns & saved up my money to buy my first deer rifle. I was an avid Outdoor Life reader so I brought home a Rem 700 BDL in .270 Win ($95). My dad admired the rifle & then said, "What happened, did they run out of .30-06's?" I guess that comment about sums it up pretty good!...LOL

I am a .270 fanatic..I have killed more game with the .270 than all other rifles put together.

My Ruger #1's are..The .204 Ruger, the .405 win ,and the .45/70

The .45/70 and .405 are fantastic for cast bullets.. They are some of my favorites..They will shoot as good or better than I am able to shoot them.
The .204 is finicky, somedays it shoots well and sometimes no..
It only likes Berger 35 gr flat base bullets and IMR3031.

Clay M , I too settled on the 308 as all I really needed. Runs cast easily and generally easy to get to shoot well. I chose a Kimber Classic84 as my "only" bolt hunting rifle. The 45-70 #1 stays with me, I sold my 243 years ago and alos regret that sale!

The 30-06 is a great cartridge. That said, there is nothing finer than a pre-war model 70 in good ol 30GOVT06. I've got a couple and they ooze quality, probably the one good thing about the depression, there were so few rifle orders they took the extra time to ensure every rifle that went out the door was right.

The ruger no 1 is great but the pre64 model 70s aren't going to be getting any cheaper.

Clay M

I love the old Win model 70 pre 64's .I had one in .300H&H that was a fantastic rifle. I sold an M1A national match rifle to buy it..I shot it a while and then sold it to buy another M1A.
I had a dear shooting buddy who had a pre 64 .270 standard that was one of the best shooting rifles of its type I have seen. He died ,and his wife sold all his guns to a gun trader..
Never let any of his friends have a chance at any of his guns.
She hated his hobby, and liquidated everything when he died.

I have to admit I really like the new 2015 Ruger #1 medium sporter 24" barrel in .30/06
If my dealer has one when I visit next week I will probably buy it, if the wood is nice.
That is the problem with ordering one sight unseen.
He had a #1 light sporter in .30/06 a while back with the best wood I have ever seen on a #1.
Only problem is I really don't care for the light sporters.
To me the barrel is too light.
My favorite #1 is the Tropical..
If he has tropical .375 H&H..well I may be ruined..

I had a Ruger #1 .375 H&H at one time.
It was a bell ringer as far as recoil. The Winchester Model 70 Safari grade will handle recoil much better.
It would take balls or iron to shoot a Ruger #1 Tropical in .458 win
I like the .458 but I am NOT lining up for that one,
To me the .405 win is perfect in the Tropical..
Maybe I just better stay away from my dealer..

I need another .375 H&H like I need a hole in my head..

I was in Cabelas Gun Library a while back ,and they had a special edition
Ruger #1 in .250 Savage..It may have been the best looking #1 I have ever seen. They only wanted $1600..

Perhaps I need a .30/06 like I need a hole in my head, but if he has one I may buy it.

I am currently shooting the .405 win with a 330 gr bullet at about 2000 fps.
It is perfect as far as recoil..No leading , but I have not pushed it any further.

The .405 win is my favorite round for cast bullets.

I was enamored with Jack O'Conner growing up.I started using the .270 in 86 .

I have killed most of my game with it and the .45/70

The 270 is also a classic, but I've always favored the 30-06 because it can also be fed to the Garand. I've never seen one but I bet a 270 m1 would be one sweet shooter.

When I had a #1 in .375 H&H we always shot (J bullets) and maximum speeds. With that the recoil was substantial. If I had one now I would load it down and use cast bullets..

i've killed alot of deer with the #1 in 270win. i made very good shots out of this one. the best shot was a 8pointer at a whopping 10'(its the avatar) and the second best was a doe at 375+/- yards.

i was around 14 years old when i seen my first #1. i met a guy finishing dressing out a deer. we talked some and he showed me what got the 6point, a ruger #1 in 7x57!!! i fell in love with it!!! i'm still trying to find one...and a 257 bob!!!

I got lucky on the Number One's. I am totally convinced each #1 is a law unto itself. My current project is to get the #1A 30-06 running with cast bullets. Next will be the 257 Roberts. The Rhinos and the like are no longer a problem in Tennessee so the 375, for now, is a safe queen. Once I had a Browning single shot in 25-06. Don't think I'll get another. My #1A is an outstanding looking rifle. It's a shame that the #1's are going extinct.

Clay M
09-05-2015, 07:31 PM
My favorite #1 is the .405 win..I would have bought two if I had known they would only make it a couple of years..
I have a 400 gr Accurate mold for the rifle. I have not tested it yet..
I doubt they will make the .405 again, but if they do, I will buy another ..
My rifle slugs .412 and the rifling is somewhat shallow. The .414 bullets work perfect.
I use the Hornady .416 gas checks..
I would say it is my favorite smokeless rifle with cast bullets..

I will try to get a .30/06 Medium sporter, if I don't have to special order it..
I would rather have the same rifle in .308 win ,but I am pretty sure they won't make that..

Now that I'm in my 60's, I don't think I'll be headed back to Africa. I put together a .458 WM Ruger #1 and rechambered it to .458 Lott for "the next dream hunt". Added a soft recoil pad, mercury recoil dampener, and a set of peep sights that fit the Ruger scope grooves on the receiver. Took a monster recoil machine and turned it into a recoil ***** cat. Instead of using it for what it's designed to be, I have made it into my fancy .45-70 equivalent with reduced loadings. Much like the OP, I'm starting to lust for a #1 in .30-06. Maybe I can trade this into one.

The Mercury suppressors are great. I did the same thing with two Model 70's in .458 win and .416 Rem.
I have a Browning A Bolt in .375 H&H.. I added a Mercury suppressor..It brought the rifle up to 9lbs.
The recoil is now about like an 06 .
It is a deadly accurate rifle, and one I will take to Alaska ,if I ever get to go..

If I buy another .375 H&H ,it will be a Winchester Model 70 Safari Grade.
Those are the rifles I prefer..

I had a 74 Sharps Roughrider in Krag of a while. I probably should have kept that one, but I wanted an original Win 95 in .405 win, so I sold it to a friend..

One thing I have learned, you can't have them all, unless you are a lot richer than I am..

I have owned and traded a lot of guns in my life..
Some I should have kept, but I got to experience shooting a lot of stuff I could never have afforded otherwise..

Called my dealer and there is good and bad news..
The bad news is ,all he had is a Tropical in .450/400 Nitro Express, and a #1 A in .280 rem..
The good news is I don't need to spend the money. So it worked out fine for me.
I could get him to special order a #1 medium in .30/06 , but I really hate to buy a #1 sight unseen..
The wood can be anything from spectacular, to very plain. For $1200 I would want good wood..

If I run across a 30WCF #1 it will be comeing home with me to keep the 4570 company! A 357mag would also be interesting too. I hear you on the not needing to buy anything, little revolvers keep following me home and a 375Win BB94 that thinks it's a 38-55:) To the point something needs to leave before anything else comes home !

They both are really excellent shooters. I believe I made the right choice buying those two..
I think I will be satisfied with that for now.

When I was a kid, also many moons ago, I was watching a James Bond movie with my dad. I asked about his gun . and my dad said it was a Walther PPK, a 9mm. "Nice lady's gun" he said.

I think I was in my mid 20s before I realized people carried things other than 45 ACP for self defense and I was in my early 30s before I realized there were 45 ACPs other than the 1911

I had 2 #1's Both 1B models. I sold the 7mm Rem Mag, but ended up keeping the '06, which I sent to HK Arms in Selma, Al and had it chambered to 30/06 A.I. It shoots cast like a dream, 160 grain Lee boolits w/ a gas check, but I haven't shot any deer with an A.I. loading, just the standard 180 gr. GameKings w/ Varget and Federal match primers that I loaded up before the conversion. After the last heart attack, I don't think I've been hunting since.

In a time long, long ago I had a Ruger #1 in 375 H & H and loved that gun. But for some reason (being young and inexperienced had much to do with it) I was using the trunk of my VW Beetle to rest my elbows on while steadying the rifle. The muzzle was way above the metal of the trunk so I thought nothing of it.

You should all see what the muzzle blast of a 375 H & H from that No. 1 will do to a VW Beetle trunk. The concussion opened a hole the size of a large dinner plate, with the metal peeled back as neat as you please. Lesson learned on that one.

I now have one in 458 win mag but don't like it near as well as the 375 caliber. Still, just pack your shoulder under your shirt or coat with everything you can find on the back seat of your car for padding and it isn't bad at all - at least for the first 20 rounds. After that, my smile tends to become more of a grimace. Lighter loads are definitely on my horizon if I plan to shoot this one much.

Lately I have just been paying out money to get caught up on bill, plus we just bought a new car..
When I was a kid I would have bought it anyway, but now that I am older I have to use more discretion..Bad thing amount being older.. Not as much fun.

Thank you so very much for the website..
Many great ones to choose from.
For shooting cast bullets I believe the .30/30 or the .308 win would be hard to beat..
I have not owned a .30/06 in over twenty five years..
It was a caliber that dominated my interest when I was young..
Just feel like it is time to own another..
I can remember getting up on Christmas morning ,and my dad had bought me a brand new .30/06 Nothing equaled that moment for me..
I really love the 06 ,and it has been many years since I worked with one.

For me the 06 is revisiting my misplaced childhood, and those legenday years in which I grew up..
A time that has come and gone, and will be no more..
But the 06 still remains supreme.
Part of fortune..

Where there is a will there is a way. Especially for an old guy.
I decided to sell a guitar I never play anymore and buy the #1.
It is amazing the power of nostalgia..
It should be here tomorrow..
I am stoked .. I really wanted this one.
Will give a range reports as soon as I exchange the rings that come with the gun for extension rings.
I already have a brand new Leupold 3X9 with long range duplex.
I have the dies, and the brass is on the way..
If it doesn't shoot I will wrap it around a tree..
You never know with a #1..it is a roll of the dice..but they are beautiful.

I hope I didn't get suckered, because I have had some bad ones in the past, but I believe they had bad barrels .The two new ones I have will shoot better than I can.

Plain wood , nothing fancy.. A good piece of straight grain walnut, with nice coloration.
The dealer also had two other (new) production #1 and they also had plain wood..A fancy piece of wood may slip through now and again , but it doesn't look like the norm for now.
That's fine..It is not a deal killer, I was just thankful he ordered the rifle for me..
Everything looks good. Ruger is going to send me out new extension rings at no charge.

Loss of money is correct.. The #1's have gotten on up there in price now..
I remember when I bought my first one in the late 70's ..
It was chambered in 7X57. It wouldn't shoot for love , money or little apples..
Almost soured me on the #1 permanently..
My second one was the .375H&H. It would shoot pretty well ..sometimes..

I really enjoy working with the #1..most of the time..

I believe that Ruger is putting good barrels on them nowadays..

We will see how this 06 shoots..

:)I will know soon..

Went to my eye Dr. today ,and he says I have cataracts starting, especially in my right eye, as luck would have it..

If this 06 shoots well then there is only one more that I want, and that is another .375H&H..

I expect at least MOA out of all my rifles .Some will do a great deal better, but that is the bottom line.
My #1's in .45/70 and .405 win will shoot about 1.5 MOA with cast bullets .That is with a 5X scope. I figure they will shoot MOA.. but that is probably the best I can do with my eyesight..

Unfortunately my eyesight is starting to sux..
ain't it great growing old..

My father shot left handed because he had a bad right eye.
After fifty years of training right handed, I fear it is too late for me to do that..

Spent most of the day loading for her.I bought Norma brass . it seems to be consistent to within one grain. Lapua is also great brass but thicker and heavier so max loads would have to be reduced somewhat.
I am starting with 150 and 165 gr bullets, and IMR 4064,IMR 4350,, Varget,and IMR 4831.
I have enough loads to know whether the gun is going to shoot well.
I have the RCBS 180gr GC bullet mold I and excited about trying.
Just waiting on the extension rings from Ruger.
I really like the feel of this medium sporter. I like the 24" barrel, and I like having open sights , so I can use a peep sight while my eyesight will still allow it.

There are many great bolt guns available now.I really like the Winchester Model 70 Alaskan.
I considered buying it instead of the #1,but it is longer and heavier.
If the #1 will shoot well I would rather have it.

I like the .308 win better than the 06 ,but with the 180 grain bullets and up the 06 comes into it's own.

The .45/70 #1 is probably the best one to have..

If you only want one...;)

If this 06 shoots then I will for sure buy one last #1 in .375 H&H..

If I could only have two centerfires, then those are the two I would choose..

Got the scope mounted an the rifle sighted in, but didn't have time to take it to the longer range for shooting today.
The rifle weighs 9lbs with the scope, which is a nice weight for a hunting rifle.
Recoil with 150 gr bullets is nonexistent ..
I am impressed with the barrel..after scrubbing in good.It is has a mirrow finish..

The trigger pull is not that great..I figure about five pounds..
It has no throat ,which is typical of Ruger #1's

I will know tomorrow or Thursday what this rifle is capable of doing.
I already know it will be fine as a hunting rifle, but what it will do with cast bullets remains to be seen.

My first impression is that Ruger is turning out just a few #1's that are Lipsey's exclusives.

Looks like they are taking the time to get them right, so it may not be a bad thing that they are limited production.

I smell a .375 Hoot and Holler on the way..
It is somehow in the blood..

Well just got back from the ranger..
Looks like I rolled the dice and won.
I believe Ruger may be doing their best work now.

It is easy to get three shot one inch groups but not five shots.

Best group of the day came with the Hornady 165gr flat base bullet, and 58.5 grs of IMR 4831
I had four shots in 3/4" at 100yds.
I dropped the fifth shot..
Could have been me, but I was not using magnum primers with the load ..

It is the load I will work with for a while. Up or down .5 a grain ,and different primers. This load is a grain under maximum in the Hornady book..

This load is over 100% load density ,which is a good choice for the .30/06

The #1's are very sensitive as to how you hold them and where you place the forearm on the rest
each time.

Once I am satisfied with the jacketed bullet loads I will move on to cast bullets.
I am not too sure I will be able to seat the front driving band out of the case with the RCBS 180 gr bullets.Which means the gas check will be below the neck..

I have fun working with the #1's They present a unique challenge.
It has been a while since I worked with a .30/06 .
Load development is key to see what this rifle is capable of..
If it will shoot 3/4" for five shots I will be happy with it.
I think Ruger has come a long way from the old days..
I believe better barrels has a lot to do with it.
They are also setting the forearms up a bit differently.
This rifle will shoot, it is just whether it will be consistent..
I am not getting any vertical stringing..
Just haven't found the perfect loads yet..

The Ruger #1's must have righteous loads..
I am thinking IMR 4350 and IMR 4831..
Maybe Varget, but I don't really have but a couple of pounds..

I would much rather work with a rifle than to hunt.

I guess I am no longer a hunter as I was in the old days..

I don't dream and look forward to it any more..

But ,I once was a hunter..and that occupied my dreams ..not so much the rifle.

I have owned eight different #1 and one #3 in my life.
My biggest complain would be the trigger.
Trying to work up loads that will shoot under an inch with a 5-7 # trigger is a challenge.
There is no easy fix for it ,other than sending it off to a specialized gunsmith and have them regrind the angle and set it up for about 2- 3#
My new rifle has a s slight creep and then breaks and about 5-6#

With my best target rifles the trigger pull is measured in oz. not pounds..

My first Ruger #1 was a standard model in .25-06 purchased in 1976. That was followed by the #1 Light Sporter in .30-06 in 1978. Finally, picked up a used #1 with damaged barrel, had it rebarreled by Ralph Carter in Fountain, Colorado, as a 7mm Rem. Mag., 28" tapered octagon barrel and Circassion walnut stock with fleur-de-lis checkering.

These are all excellent shooting rifles and the calibers span just about any hunting opportunities in North America. Of the three I have used the Light Sporter .30-06 the most, as it is a pleasure to carry all day. It was also the first rifle I used with cast bullets, loading Lee C309-180 and C309-170 to about .30-30 performance, and it has proven to be a great performer on game critters.

If I ever have to make the choice of "just one rifle" the #1 Light Sporter in .30-06 will definitely be in the running. It has accounted for more meat in the freezer than anything else I have ever used, including cottontails, turkeys, grouse, deer, and elk. Definitely a keeper.

My first #1 was a 1AH in 270 that I got NIB from a dealer friend of mine in trade for my LH M700 270 (straight across; he'd had the Ruger for a few years and "nobody wanted it" but had a customer who was after a left-handed M700...) It was the best trade I ever made--after 11 dry years hunting Elk, I never took that Ruger into the field without at least seeing legal game--never shot an Elk with it but harvested many deer over the years.

In a moment of weakness I sold it and have regretted it ever since. My only #1 today is a 218 BEE standard with irons.

I am very impressed with what Ruger is doing now as far as their gun making ability.
All systems are go on a #1 in .375 H&H.
When I talked with the rep at Lipsey's ,he said they have not been produced yet.
I have my dealer on alert to get one when they do.
The .30/06 was everything I hoped for..
It is a dream fulfilled..
As far as accuracy, it blows the doors off of the two rifles I grew up shooting..
But then again, I have different skills now so it would not be a fair comparison..
If I had to bet, I would bet on this new#1
My opinion is that the current Ruger barrels are top notch for a production barrel.

Clay, Try a Moyers trigger in your rifle. I put one in my 7mm Rem Mag and had it adjusted to 2.5 lbs. That #1 was my "go to" #1. I'm looking to sell my other #1b, a 30/06 A.I I bought new at a gun show several years back. Dies, Fire formed brass, plastic boxes, the whole 9 yards. After 2 major heart attacks and now cancer surgery, I don't think deer hunting will be in my future.. I suppose I'll do some serious fishing again....

Are you talking a sexy and good looking. One of my favorite infatuations in an 06. Plus it will do the job on anything in NA and most of AF.

Went back to the range today..Seems like 59 grs of IMR 4831 may be a bit more consistent than the 58.5grs ..I also tried 58 and 59.5 but the groups opened up , so 58.5 and 59 are the sweet spot.
As long as I clean the barrel every five shot the gun shoots very consistently.
I don't believe there are any forearm bedding problems on this particular rifle, and it should be a good rifle for cast bullets. I will just have to find the right bullet design for the lack of throat.
I probably won't alter the gun any at this point.

One last note on my #1 in .30/06. I have shot the gun enough now to learn more about this particular rifle.
First the gun shoot like **** if you hold it in a relaxed position off the bench.
It does the classic stringing of shots vertically.
I have found when I hold the rifle very tightly to my shoulder , it shoots it's best groups.
I also use a rear bag that I pinch to gain stability .
Just typical bench rest stuff, but the #1 seems to be very sensitive to how you hold it.
More so than many other rifles that I own.
I pull it in as tight as I can hold it without muscle tremor.
I am getting MOA with both three and five shot groups, (with the proper loads.)
This rifle IS very load sensitive,as are ALL my #1's
O'Conner use to say that he didn't put much stock in Magic loads.
That does apply to the Ruger #1.

The new rifles have great barrels, and the trigger on my rifle has improved considerably after the first 100rds.
I clean after every five shot with Bore Tech Eliminator. The rifle takes on a good deal of copper as do most new production rifles, but it is getting easier to clean.

Just some ramblings, but I though I would pass it on.
Good luck with you new #1's and don't give up on them without a lot of loading and shooting.

I love the rifle , it is far ,far better that my #1's of old..

I also keep the forward rest fairly close the the action. I reposition it to about 4" with every shot, and allow about four minutes for the barrel to cool between shots..

Good luck to you my friends, I hope this helps..

Best group day was 58 grains of IMR 4350 and a Hornady 150 flat base bullet.
Three shots went into one elongated hole and two opened the group to MOA.
Human error is involved of course. I believe this rifle is pretty amazing.

I believe it will shoot very well with the correct cast bullet..
I hope the RCBS 180 gr will work since I already have that mold.
