I'm going Hog hunting this sunday in southern OK. I only shoot pistols period. I want to take two pistols and one of them will be a Ruger 45 LC Blackhawk. Should I take my Ruger 10 inch 357 max, 16.5 inch OTT 357 max contender or 7 inch shorty contender in 40sw?

IXNAY the 40 short and weak and take three "pistols"[smilie=1:

I could get it down to 2 pistols from your list :-D but you said you have to take the biggunslow 45[smilie=1:

If I were to choose just 1 it would be the OTT 16.5 inch "PISTOL"

My views may be a bit more than biased though

Mind if I ask if you are using guide and what part of the state? I am in Kansas and have thought about an OK hog hunt.

most people that hunt hogs with a pistol use a big bore mag 44 and up hogs can get real mean sometime without being shot. Hunting from the ground I would want to have someone backing me up in a tree you will be ok. Also it makes a difference on what kind of hog your hunting feral or full blooded both have tough skin and a strong will for revenge. Goodluck to you.

I take the Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt for a second gun on the hip and the TC Contender with the OTT .357 Max barrel for the main hunting gun.

If you're going to be using dogs...you can hunt'em like we do in Georgia.
Once the dogs have the hog "bayed-up", toss in a pit bull or two to "catch". While the hog is occupied with the dogs....ease around behind him, and grab his hind legs, lifting them off the ground. Throw the hog onto his side and hold him down with your body and you can pretty much shoot him with anything you want, or stick him with your knife if you don't mind the mess. Works for us.....on black Russians and feral crosses up to 200 lbs or so.

+1 on 357 Max with 45 Back up. Ive killed lots with 22-250, never needed more than 1 shot. Took a couple with 22rf, good bullet placement is paramount. DALE

You Da Man then. Over in Ware county, our noses don't work that good. We just put the dogs on a fresh track, wait 'til they bay-up, then go runnin' on in. Get somebody to hold your beer, and jump on him. Yee-HA....

tommyn .... I normally don't respond to "hunting" questions like this because everyone has their own pet rifle/pistol/boolit & load. And no matter what you opine you're bound to step on someone's toes. But since you're coming down into my neck of the woods, & since between my son, son-in-law & me we have shot literally dozens of Oklahoma hogs, I thought I'd offer my two cents. First off, the southern OK border stretches for several hundred miles along the Red River & you didn't say exactly where you'd be hunting. The hogs born & bred in the Arbuckles are a bit different than those 50 miles south along the Red, which in turn are a bit different than those found in the southeastern or southwestern parts of the state. All the hogs we have encountered have been feral stuff. And the only ones that gave us any trouble were those who had been hit by a badly placed shot. I believe Dale Clawson's post was correct in that it dosen't take much gun to kill these hogs. Any firearm in the armoury you posted would suit me just fine. The one I would probably choose would be the one I could shoot the most accurately when the pulse is slightly elevated....:)
Here are some we have used, (that I can remember). All are used with cast boolits:

Win. Mod. 92 - .44/40 (#428666)
M1 Carbine (#311359)
M1 Garand (Just for the hell of it) (#311335)
Marlin .35 Rem. (Sundog's boolits)
.350 Winchester (Sundog's boolits)
SAA Revolver 7 1/2" bbl. in .44/40 (#428666)
New Blackhawk in .357 mag. (Group buy 180 gr PB)
.40, .45 & .50 cal. Muzzle Loaders (patched balls - rifles)
S&W Mod. 1917 in .45 ACP (LBT WFN 235 gr)

My brain is locking down now. When I post this I'm gonna' call my son because I know he has used several pistols that I can't remember. Come on down & enjoy yourself. And remember that ham goes best with grits & gravy. (Gravy is a vegetable).

On my guided hog hunt in OK my two close up guides carried a pistol each as there main weapon (45lc 6" & 357mag 6") and a knife, the third guide carried a 30 06 BAR.
I was using a knife as my main weapon and had a 1911 45acp as backup if needed.

I like the 45LC for hogs.
Load some good WFN or SWC style boolits in it and go get 'em!

Why are you going to OK? Plenty of hogs south of Fort Leonard Wood right in Missouri. The woods are a little rough but you get plenty of excersize lugging them out.

I got a 300 plus sow with the Ruger 357 max I had bought from Ken. Locker plant called and said I had 178 lbs of meat ready to pick up. Got her between the eyes and no meat wasted. It was a blast and ready to go again.

"45 minutes south of Pauls Valley, OK"

That would be in the general area of Ardmore, Wilson or Overbrook. I've hunted a bunch of those woods. Love Wildlife Management Area is close too. And I understand it has a sizeable number of hogs. If you went down I-35 you passed right by my house & didn't say "Hello." Next time there's always coffee in the pot & maybe a couple of sandwiches. Glad you had a good time.
