I am not familiar with the Stevens 200.
Is it a Bolt gun or single shot ?

OK I looked up the rifle.
First off, the Bolt Face is wrong to fit the .308.
And Possibly the bolt stroke is too short or the Magazine would be to short.
Why do you want to rebarrel it in .308.
Even if the action and magazine are long enough, you have to change the barrel, then either open up the bolt face or replace the bolt and then the magazine follower and possibly the extractor.
It might be cheaper to just buy a new rifle.

IF it uses a standard Savage barrel nut, you can get a pre-fit barrel to screw on inplace of the .223. Should be able to get a different bolthead for the .308. They are both short action rifles and the magazine should be no problem. Check with someone in the know. Should not be too expensive as some used take off barrels are on e-bay for cheap.

Check the savage forum. Lots of information there about Stevens there.

Thanks, I see both midway and brownell carries the bolt head and magazine parts. Was wondering if the action was the same as the Stevens 200's that were made in 308 and 243 win.

Savage/Stevens only build a short and long actions IIRC.

Yes you can. You need to change the barrel, then the bolt face. If you want it to feed from a magazine you need to change that also.

I did one last year, but I went the easy way. I went from a skinny barrel .243win to a med/heavy barrel 6mm-250 (22-250 necked up to 6mm).

For comparison L-R, 222rem, 223rem, 6mm-250, 243win

all you need to do is take the bolt out of yours and measure where the pin goes thru. A long action is differant than a short. The 200's are made up of long and short bolts.

Have two 223 rifles, a Savage Axis and a Marlin XS Heavy Varmit barrel. Couple of weeks ago, I received a Shaw barrel from Gun Shack chambered in 6x45 (aka 6mm 223 Remington) with a 1 in 8 twist. Marlin shoots too good to mess with, rebarreled the Axis. After several trips to range with the 6x45, experimenting with reloads, am quite happy with the accuracy.

Cousin is waiting for a 6x45 barrel to arrive for his Stevens 200. I think he said he is getting a 1-9 inch twist. What weight bullet are you working with?

I have one of the Stevens 200 rifles in .223 with the off gray plastic stock and have changed it to .308 Winn with just a barrel, bolt head and magazine change. Work just like it came from the Factory that way.

Yes you can, and yes it's not all that difficult----but it would be easier (and probably cheaper was well) to just trade for a Savage or Stevens in 223. If you're doing it for the experience than I completely understand, but if you're just doing it because you want a 223 then I would look for a trade.

You will need some sort of fixture to hold the receiver when you turn off and turn back on the new barrel. I made one from a giant oak block, but if you don't like making stuff then budget $50 for a Savage action wrench.

Hey gents. Anybody know if the Savage Axis can accept barrels for the 110 series, assuming the the action length, bolt face, and magazine are all correct?

Yes. The Axis are all small shank, I think.

If what a Savage rep told me about 4 or so years ago is correct. The Axis is simply a cosmetic upgrade of the M-200. The action is the same and the only mechanical difference he was aware is the Axis' adjustable trigger.

If Midway and Brownells have the bolt head buy it. I tried to buy one directly from Savage and they lawyered up on the phone. They said "no" will only sell it to a legitimate gunsmith.

If you're not aware the Steven M-200 has been discontinued. Probably the last of the brand new in the box, blue steel, center fire rifles that sold for under or about $200. I re-barreled a 300 Win Mag M-200 to 458 Winchester.

Around here the 200 was just a little bit cheaper than the ubiquitous synthetic/blue department store special Savage 110. Really, you were just shaving a few bucks off the price by going with a standard trigger. I really like the gray stock color of the 200 though.

Just finished my 22-250 to 6.5 Creedmoor conversion. Could not be happier with the outcome. I did take the receiver and old barrel to a gunsmith to take off the old nut and barrel. He charged me 20.00. I did make the blocks to screw it together and it held up to the 30 ftlbs of torque that I put it on with. Shot it today, and was impressed with the barrel so far. Shoots about 3" at 100 yds. Only had time for 30 shots and should improve with more lead down the barrel.
