h&r with red dot
my h&r 45-70 with a mueller red dot scope finally got some time on the range. i loaded up some moyer's cast bullets( Rifle Bullets (http://www.moyerscastbullets.com/rifle.html) )that were(i know, i'm working on a lead pot) 405gr fbfn (.459") and h4198. i should have saved the target so i could of taken a picture, but i seem to be forgetful. http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/flute.gif where was i? right, boolits...http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/biggrin.gif

i did three boolits that go from 33.0, 34.0 and 35.0 gr of h4198. also i had a target with hand drawn 3" diamonds targets. i'm trying my best, do you know how hard it is to draw with your left hand!!!http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/rofl.gif hey, i'm stroke-abled, right half of my body doesn't work very well. anyhoo, heres what i shot.

5 shots
33.0gr - 2 1/2" at 50 yards
34.0gr - 4" at 50 yards
35.0gr - 1 1/2 at 50 yards

with the red dot i am really happy that i get 1 1/2" (5 shots) for basically trapdoor loads. i think its going around 1400fps, i don't own a chrony...yet. i am going to try 36.0-38.0gr, but i'm pretty sure that 35.0gr with 405gr fbfn will be it for deer. i'm going to hunt them where 50-60 yards is a long shot. next year i'm gonna try the 350gr ranch dog at 1600-1800fps.

the 34.0gr i really have a hard time believing that it got a whopping 4" group. it didn't kick, i didn't breathe/jerk the trigger/shut my eyes/move the gun. maybe it was just that the gun really didn't like that load!

but hey, a little up and a little to the left(red dot, i meanhttp://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/wink.gif), and the 35.0gr will be all right!!!!

Good luck with 45-70, They are fun to shoot! I reload with IMR4198 and have an awesome recipe for it. Is it a Buffalo rifle or the Handi rifle?

its the handi-rifle, synethic stock. my oldest boy got it for me around christmas last year. you're right, it is fun to shoot!!! my 45-70 and my tc encore(23" MGM barrel) both really like trail boss. this year i'll take the 444 out to try and find the 280gr ranch dog with rel7.

I had a Handi in 45/70. Best Handi I had! Only one I wish I didn't sell.
I had better luck with the reduce loads with Unique and 2400.
You can't beat a Millet Red Dot. I have one on a 44mag, 50cal, 50cal rifle, and 357.

You're going to share that with us, right? I have a HandiRifle and a pound of 4198.

An awesome load would be....well, you know...

Tdoyka, You will have to share how the .444 shoots as well. Any new on the 45-70 with the 36 to 38 grains?

either this week or the next. i'm waiting for my metal roof to be put on, a few windows, and a few more things that need done. this is the only thing bad because of my stroke. i'm used to doing these things, used to be a pipefitter(sewer and water mains), operator, and jack of all trades. of course, that is a REALLY steep roof:holysheep!!! maybe i'll drink coffee and b@#%h about how easy it is to put on a d$#m roof!!![smilie=l:
