I'm loading the RCBS 200gr FP plain base with Unique right now. Has anybody tried Trail Boss? I didn't find any loads using it searching this forum and I'm curious about it.

Trail Boss is designed specifically for low velocity lead bullet loads suitable for Cowboy Action shooting. It is primarily a pistol powder, but has some application in rifle.

i use trail boss in 30-40 krag, 30-06, 444 marlin, 45-70....in both cast and jacketed bullets.

make sure to do exactly as the instructions say, you don't want to compress the powder!!! i take what the powder is and then i reduce it 5-10%.

Trailboss turns my 358 Win into a 357 mag, and is very accurate. You should find similar results in your Whelen. I just fill it up to the base of the bullet, with no compression. With the nearly straight case you can't overload it as long as you don't compress the powder.

Interesting answers, Thanks. I've used it in other cases just not this one.

Haven't tried the trail boss, but i do use unique as you mentioned in post #1.
I've been using 12 gr. of unique behind a 358009 280 gr. flat base for 1275 fps. It's a nail driving load in my 35 whelen.

Hope you find a good load with the trail boss.:smile:

Just a little update I enjoyed today. In a H&R Handi rifle with NOE's 200gr RCBS FP PB(weighing 211gr) I clocked the following loads;
12gr's of Unique-1385.9 fps
12gr's of Trail Boss-1248.7 fps
14gr's of Trail Boss-1353.5 fps
16gr's of Trail Boss-1419.4 fps
The best grouping at 50 yards was the 16gr load of Trail Boss, 5 shots inside a 1 1/2 orange sticky dot. I'll cast more and shoot further.

Thanks, Mr. P. I gotta try this just for fun since I have lots of TrailBoss.

By the way I got one of those 'game getter' things from that guy in Canada that resizes .375" roundball for use in 35 whelen brass. It is very quick to use and is powered by those .22 power hammer cartridges, like you can buy at Lowes. REALLY low noise and recoil. I think the idea was in Canada everyone was afraid of bears and so even poor people had a big caliber rifle, but nothing for small game. And so the Game Getter came into being. It's a one man shop. Look at the bottom of page for .35 Whelen (and some other .35's).

Any cast lead 357/38spl pistol bullet can be made to shoot with low noise and low velocity in the 35 Whelen.
