As a prelude to putting up for sale here about a dozen, mostly Lyman molds, I've run into some numbers that are either obsolete/no longer made. Lyman charts (mine go back to the fold-out 1957 handbook) are of no help. I'm confident that the unofficial Lyman historians here can ID these. Thanks in advance.

What's the difference between a 31141 and a 311410A? They're both 30 cal. carbine molds, right? The 410A casts 130 gr and the 41 casts 173 gr. Designs look similar.

35887 - why a 5 digit mold number? 140 grain, I guess, for .35 or .38 caliber?

35891 - looks like a .38 spl WC, around 148 - 150 grains. Why can't I find a Lyman reference?

427098 TA - why the TA designation? I know it's a 44-40 mold.

45266 - another 5 digit ID. weight? caliber?

Ohaus 44-245K - can't find any info on this one either.

Once again, TIA.

If you look here

and choose "moulds" then 'lyman" you'll be able to find the numers for all the moulds and a pic and descriptions.

I'd be interested in the 31141 and the ohaus 44-250K. :-)

31141 and 311410 are not the same mould. The 31141 is currently numbered the 311041 and is the 173 grain flatpoint. The 311410 is the lighter weight bullet.

You should find most of these at te castpic site mentioned by Blammer or you can do a search for ol' buffalo bullet mould tables

Thanks for the quick responses. Just been to both sites. Notice the 311041 is a gas check mould, too.

Blammer, see my PM to you.

The Ohaus 44-245K moulds look somewhat rusty, so the castpic article on lapping is just what I was looking for.

mr. gizmo:

To answer some of your other questions:

#35887: Several years back, when they went to computerized inventory control, Lyman inserted zeros into the 4- and 5-digit designators, following the "size-to" and before the more-or-less chronological "cherry number" identifier, to make them all 6-digits; the old #3118 became #311008, #35887 -> #358087, etc..

#35891; you'll find it on the Castpics site under that number - it is currently listed in the Lyman Annual Product Catalog as #358091. To add to the confusion, the Catalogs now show it under "Bullet Number" 358091, AND "Mould Number" 2660091; that seven digit number is a "stock number", and we do not use it, as it just adds un-necessary confusion.

#45266 only shows up only in one older catalog from 1962, where it is listed at 225 grs., for the .45 ACP; it is very similar to the much commoner 200-gr. #452460, but appears to have a tapered base band (NOT a bevel-base or a gas check base), most likely someone's special-order item that somehow got into the catalog; a photo of this one would be interesting.

The -TA suffix is a code used at Lyman to identify the specific cherry with which the mould was cut, for quality control purposes; the -A on the #311410 A is an earlier version of the same thing, we think.

Thanks for the info, Floodgate.

Somewhere, either Castpic or the Buffalo site, gave 215 grains for the 452066 boolit, but that's irrelevant for my purpose.

I'll try to take a picture of the 452066 mould and post it. If I'm lucky, there's a boolit in the die and I'll get that, too.

Pictures here. Indeed the boolit does have a tapered base.

I don't mean to be a tease, but, in a day or so, I'll be posting twelve Lyman moulds and a few handles in the Classifieds. Eight of them are in first class condition and four need a little TLC (read lapping and/or rust removal)

I'll give you the right of first refusal on the 45266 single. Thanks for asking.

mister gizmo:

PM me with your asking price on the #45266. I wouldn't need the handles, if you have another mould that needs them; I have several sets. Thanks!
