IMR 4198 for Cast

Is anyone using IMR4198 for cast boolit loads in 7x57, .30/30, .308 or .30/06?

IMR4198 is probably one of the best all-around powders for cast bullets in rifles.

I don't shoot 7x57 and can't advise you there, but I use 22 grs. as a starting load in .30-30, .308 Win. and .30-'06 and as a full-charge load in the .44-40.

In a strong, modern .44-40 rifle you can't get enough 4198 into the case to get into any trouble.

In a .30-30 Winchester with #31141 or #311291 a charge of 25 grains is a full load.

In the .303 British, .30-40 Krag or .308 Win. you can go up to about 28 grains with good results.

I use 30 grains in the .30-'06 for a heavier hunting load.

I used to use IMR 4198 with a variety of cast bullets in both the .30-30Win. (no longer have the data you're requesting) and .30-06. In the latter, I typically used no more than 24gr., which was accurate and clean burning. Alas, it was my favorite CB rifle powder until AA 5744 came along, which gave lower velocity extremes and standard deviations than 4198. Btw, since it's also faster burning than 4198, start at 20gr. in the .30-06 and work up to 22gr.; i.e., if you decide to try it.

25.5 gr. of 4198 is my 'go-to' in .308, 7.65 Argentine, 7.62x54R and have had some success with it in 8x57 and .303 Brit (but found I obtain more consistent groups with 4895 in those rounds). Also use 4198 to duplicate BP ballistics with heavy boolits in the .38-55. For .30-30, though, I have to agree with Maven, AA5744 is the way to go...at least, in my Savage 340 bolt gun.

As stated above. I got great accuracy from 4198. It's just hard to meter it's long stick. Hodgdon is shorter but still long stick.
Those powders that shoot so well are why you see high tech electronic dribble to weight powder measures. Many shooter think they are worth the trouble. It's been two years since I entered into a rifle match. That aid the best shooting rounds I ever loaded up for AR-15 were IMR 4198 thrown from a Lyman 55 measure. That was back when I could see so I can't duplicate those results.

I recently bought some AA LT-32 to replace my old 4198 in my SP-1 AR-15 and new rifles. Since then AA came out with LT-30 to duplicate the 4198 burn rate. Stuff meters like a ball powder and shoots great. Not cheep but in the field its pennies a day.

Nice to hear someone using 7mm. I use IMR4198 im my 7-08Rem. Similar ballistics to your 7x57. Lee 130gr, cci 200's, Imr 4198-17.5grs. Bullet touching the lands. 1.25" group at 100yd.

What would be a good starting point or place to look it up using the lee c155-2r boolit? Its going in 762x54r out of a mosin.

4198 is my second best powder for CB's in my 308 and my "go-to" when I run out of 2400. My 250-3000 loves 4198 with CB's as do my 444 and 7mm TCU. When developing CB loads for a new-to-me caliber, it is my first powder to check.

Either 18.0 grs. IMR 4227 or 24.0 grs. IMR 4198 have been my goto cast powder charges in 7mms and .30's for a long time. I'm still accuracy-testing 27.8 grs. IMR 4198 to get 1800 fps. with a #31141 from an 18" bbl .303 Brit. truck gun I built.

It can be used very well in the .45-70 with lead bullets too.
I'm using Hodgdon's version of 4198.
Great powder in the .222 & .223 Rem. with jacketed bullets too!
