OK, so I got a new toy.

Never had a big bore pistol before, unless you count the 357 mag. (didn't think so...)

Never cast pisto boolits before either.

Never slugged a brl and cylinder either.

So I got a big learning curve ahead of me.

After reading up and getting a few sample boolits from fatnhappy and sundog.

And eventually getting 4, yea 4, 44 cal moulds...

I get to get a good pistol and start working up a load for it.

Oh yea, let me not forget that I traded some stuff for some 44 mag brass from singleshotbuff. :)

So I trade into this pistol, and luck into a good scope for on the cheap.

After some discussion with others on what to shoot and try first I give fatnhappy's 277gr 429640's a whirl first with 2400. 15gr was pretty good group at 25 yds, but upped it to 16 gr and got this group at 25 yds.

And here is that same boolit at 100 yds

Notice the oblong holes in target at 100 yds.

I suspect if I up the velocity a bit they may straighten out an the group may shrink.

I'll try that next.

The next load I set up was just for plinking and having fun. So I used sundogs 250gr plain base boolits he sent me, loaded up with 19gr of 2400 as a starting load.
I never imagined i'd be so accurate.

25 yd target.

easy shooting and accurate.

I'll chrony it later and I suspect it may be good enough for deer as is!

so all in all I had a really good day at the range and was really pleased with my 44!

My learning curve with the .44's since 1956 has shown that 2400 does NOT give the best accuracy. It shoots good enough for hunting and plinking but when I want tight groups I use 296.
The SRH is a fantastic gun and you should be able to extend your best 25 yd group out to 50 yd's easily.

LOL thanks dean!

notice the change of one grain of powder in the load and the difference in group?

gotta love it!

Is that a Hogue monogrip? I put one on my SRH and it is soooo nice. good shooting, are you planning on hunting with it?

yea I got that new 7 shot gun.. :rolleyes

actually I shot one more time at the target cause I forgot NOT to.... so a 7 shot group.

Yes that is the Hogue monogrip. It's sweet.

and yes I plan on hunting with it this fall.

Just finished trying 16gr of Lilgun and the Lee 310FP. It flies true at 25 yds so now on with the accuracy testing part.

On dual crimp grooved bullets you can seat them farther out and create more boiler room. This is true of DW's, and Ruger Redhawks and Super Redhawks.

Enjoy the 44.......!

yes on the tested ones I seated it out to the bottom crimp groove, still had room in the cyl.
