How do you go about making switch barrels for mausers, as to not marr nor mark the barrel finish with your barrel wrench??

are you talking switch barrel like a BR gun, or like the old sporting mauser switch barrels? the old switch barrel mausers were done with an interupted thread on both barrel and rcvr, there was no need for a barrel vise. BR guns are ususally done with soft aluminum jaws in the vise, and they arent typically torqued on as tight as the average barrel.

You can do it like the benchrest guys do. They screw the barrel in by hand and finish tightening by grasping the stock and action and give it a final twist. This seems to be a popular vise with them. It's aluminum. Lead sheeting, kraft paper and leather are effective padding to help prevent marring a barrel but not tightening it excessively would be number 1 in my book.

the Savage or in my Case the post 64 Winchester Model 70 don't have the extractor cutout that needs to be lined up when swapping barrels. With the Mauser you will have to fit each barrel so it head spaces correctly - put a witness mark then file the extractor groove.

I had my Winchester modified to use a lock nut like the Savage does, so that you can set the head space then make the barrel locked with a spanner wrench without needing a barrel vise or action wrench and just leaving the action in the stock.
. You could do this with a mauser

Rhineland Arms has made Mauser barrels with locknut conversions for several years.

I am not referring to the interrupted threads thing.
The savage barrel lock nut; and the leather/lead padding is the things I am asking for.

Any more good suggestions?

Mauser does not have an extractor cut. Springfield and Enfield do

There was a feature in Shotgun News a few years back where they made the Mauser 98 into a Switch Barrel.
It was several articles long and was not much more than threading the barrel like a Savage, with a running thread and no stop collar on the barrel. and making a Barrel Jamb nut to lock the barrel in place.
I want to do one, but dont have access to a lathe right now, so I would have to farm out most of it.

Re: LAGS' post (above), yes--that was Reid Coffield. Shotgun News periodically prints a "treasury" of their best past articles, and you could contact them and see if they've included it in one of their collections. I might even have it, but it would involve an archeological dig in my shop to find it.

I think you will find that the M48 Yugo does have an extractor cut, just saying.

The Yugos have a cut because they are Safety Breeched.
But when rebarreled, it is not needed to set the barrel back in, cut with the safety breeching collar.
The standard Flat backed Mauser 98 barrel will work just fine.
But the Yugos that I do get Safety Breeched just because I take advantage of all the design features of the safety breeched system.
It gives just a little bit more case support on the case head area, thus, "potentually" more accuracy.
But I have done many with standard 98 short chambered replacement barrels , and did not cut them for the Safety Breech collar, and really have seen no differance.

I have the Shotgun News copies that have the article .
It was October 2009 and November 2009.
They were in the Short stack of copies i kept because of specific articles like this one.
Now, you have a date to research for Back Issues from Shotgun News if that is possible ?

Mauser would be better than most for a switch barrel because of the inner ring that the barrel hits against. With a jam nut it would work even better. I would use a larger diameter thread with a finer pitch for the jam nut. Really get fancy and set it up for the large Savage wrench. Biggest problem with switch barrels is getting them tight to the action. With a jam nut the barrel can be screwed in hand tight and then the nut tightened to keep it from moving.
