I have 14 lbs of Linotype Foundry type alloy 18% tin, 28% antimony, and 54% lead. How much of this Linotype do I have to alloy with pure lead to cast lead balls (for 12 gauge tri ball load) for 18-21 brinell scale hardness? What ratio?

I would say 4 - 5 lbs of pure lead to 1lb of this alloy. Possibly more.

You could download one of the alloy calculators. But I would say 28lbs of pure would get you about 84.7/6/9.3 which would put you around the bhn you need.

That should bring the antimony to 5-7% and the tin to 3-4% but that may be still too hard.

If the composition of the alloy you have is correct, and you mix at a rate of 1 pound of the type metal you have with 1.5 pounds of pure lead, you should get a BH of about 20.9..............at least according to the alloy calculator I have.

This is what I bought:

Ran a chemical composition on a sample at work and it's pretty spot on.

I'm trying to recreate the Dixie Tri Ball loads. Soft lead will not work and may bulge or blowup your barrel.

Another vote for you downloading the free alloy calc spreasdheet. It will answer all those "what if I add this" questions in the future.

Will it work from iPhone?

Unlikely to be useful on an iphone it is a spreadsheet (excel etc) and it works wonders in figuring where you will end up with hardness.

The alloy calculator is a valuable tool. I used it to provide the mix I mentioned above.

Somebody mentioned there is an app called "Numbers" that will open excel files on an iphone. I did a quick google search and it seems there are quite a few other options that will do it too.

I use it on my iPhone and iPads all the time! You just need an app that will read .xls spreadsheets. iPhone......I need a magnifying glass! But it works great.
