146351These cans of Hercules powder are coming up at an auction, the red cans are Red Dot. Don't have any idea what the others are other than advertised as shotgun powder. Would anyone have an idea as to what might be in the two brown cans and the pink one. Auction closes in 3 hours. if useable what would be its worth? Thanks for looking and any replies would be appreciated, age unknown. Kept cool and dry or so it says.

Too bad they didn't turn the cans around to see the content labels. I went to a closing out auction last year and there was a can just like the pink one marked Red Dot on the top. I took the bid up to $31.00 and no one else went any higher so I got it. After getting home I found out it was 50 BMG powder. It was full to the top so guess I came out on the good end. Guess all I can add is buyer beware. Hope you get it for cheap.

I had called the auction and had one of the employees look, nothing on the cans but Hercules except for the red cans which say Red Dot. Two hours to go $95.00 for the lot.

Joe; seems like a pig in a poke to me. Might be Red Dot , PB, Herco, ect. That said, they would all be a good powder to load with BUT, you have no idea how this stuff was stored and whether or not it's degraded. Heck of a deal if it's good powder, not so good otherwise.

I would pass if not having to see the powder first hand, I have used older powder than that but I got to inspect the can and seal before I bought.

The pink is probably red dot too. For $95 I'd try it myself. When you burn up the powder the cans are worth $100 empty.

I let the powder go it went for $153.50, didn't know the cans were worth that much. It's all good I don't know how good the powder was or how high the other bidder would have gone. There will be others. Thanks for the replies. I took it to $150.00.

You did good for the move for not know what the others cans are, also the history of it all.

Thanks Trapper, there's always a little bit of lost bidders remorse.

Maybe so but you will live to bid another day. I could swear that 2nd brown can has HERCO stenciled on it. My eyes are not as young as they used to be though.

Where can you get $ 100 for the empty cans? I have a bunch of them with powder in them that I bought 45 years ago. I will pour out the powder into another container and sell them.

Ebay sells them all of the time. I bought a couple myself for the reloading room and passed on a few to members here. If you are serious shoot me a pm with pics and description. Im interested in a couple more

the can's are worth money?

I just cut the tops off and make garbage cans out of them.

that big one in the middle should be a 12 pound keg, that's all we used to buy cause they gave a price break as you bought more.
$90- $100.00 was a lot of money back then.

I have an old Unique can. It is grey with black stenciling. No paper label. Has a Hercules scrunchy Cap on it. Had it since dirt.

Mines kind of a burgundy or beet red and it is labeled Herco with black letter stenciling running lengthways on the backside also saying Herco...I looked at it today.

the last herco can I cut open was a dark red also not deep burgundy just darker red..
the label on the front is what matters most I'm thinking.

Way back in the early `60`s I bought out a man`s shotgun loading supplies. In it was a pink Red Dot 13 lb. can and a brown Herco 13 lb. can. I keep those empty cans to remind me of those forgotten days. On that auction I bid up that box of Mono type letters to what I figured it was worth. Someone bid over me $2 to get it. I won a dresser with mirror for the Frau so there is a little happiness in the homestead.Robert
