Don't know how long I've had it but one thing that always bugged me is
it dosen't have 6X48! You would think a gunsmith supplyer's screw checker
would have 6X48! I'm trying to get an order together for screws, bits and
taps for 8X40 and it does have that size. Also need a file card and thread file. I can understand not having 1/4X22 and a few others but 6X48![smilie=1:

(I did drill and tap mine for it)

Screw CheckR is a seperate company, that has been around a long time. Brownells just had them put their name on the ones they sell. I think MSC does also.

joatmon, I thought exactly the same thing when I bought my screw checkr, but I think Brownells actually mentioned in their catalogue that 6x48 wasn't included as everybody knows what they are - or some such comment. I made my own one up with a peice of 1/4 inch flat. It's heavy enough that you can use it for shortening screws as well, like the brownells screw grabber - think thats what it was called.

I use a piece 1/8"x1" bar, which I've drilled and tapped with common screw sizes. I run the screw through before clipping it and finishing on my 1"x42' belt grinder. Screwing it back out straightens the end thread. In practice, I hold a piece of leather belting behind the sanding belt, as a pressure platen, and press the screw against the front, grinding it down to the face of the steel bar. Gives a nice square edge.

The screw checker which comes with the Brownells screw kits has holes for 6-40, 6-48 and 8-40 screws.
