View Full Version : .35 cal. Plain Based HP's
I sent Buckshot a single cav. Lyman 358156 for him to HP for me. Buckshot was to also remove the g/c shank from the 358156. I also sent a DC, SAECO , .35 cal. , 180 gr. #353 for him to HP.
The molds arrived today. I am super pleased with Buckshot's work. These two molds cast great ! ! No more g/c's expenditures for these two molds. I have another 358156 Lyman factory HP that does have the g/c shank on it. It will be left " as is " for stiff loads in the 357 Mag.
The SAECO #353 in solid weighs 180 grs.
The HP version I have now weighs 168 grs.
The HP'd plain based 358156 weighs 141 grs.
I have several 38 / 357 handguns to shoot these in along with a 98' Mauser in 358 Win. to shoot the SAECO # 353's in also.

Let us know how the PB 358156 does. I had a double cavity PB'd and it does not carry enough lube to prevent some leading.
I HP'd the 358156 on Beagle's recommendation. He says he has had real good luck with this plain based 358156.

45 2.1, Was this in a pistol or rifle aplication? Thanks, Gianni
It is a Pistol bullet , but I thought that if I keep the velocity low, I might get lucky and get some light plinking loads with it in my .358 Win ( if you notice in the photos, it has a wide , deep lube groove...it might just shoot in the 358 ? ? ). However my main purpose for having the mold is to shoot the bullets from the 38 Spec. and the 357 Mag.

This gets me to thinking. I have a 429244 single cavity that I have thought about having buckshot hollowpoint. Maybe I should also have him remove the gas check shank. So is a 429244 a good candidate for HPing and should I remove the gas check shank? It is listed as a 245 gr bullet now. After hollowpointing it would be lighter and faster.
I really am not all that knowledgeable about .44 cal. bullets, you may want to get Beagle's opinion on this one.

Kudo's to you both. Buckshot does superb work and your casting looks top shelf.

Absolutely. Hollow pointing removes weight that aids inertia. That takes pressure off of the base so that it doesn't need to carry more lube. Wished I had a kept mine.
Hollow pointing generally makes everything easier to shoot well no matter what the bore diameter.

I had Buckshot HP mine and I am hapy with it. My opinion is since HP bullets are not generally shot as plinkers and the plain base 429421 is so readily available I would leave it as is. The check allows you to use a softer alloy and get good expansion. Gianni

That is a good point. I wouldn't shoot up a whole lot of them. I add tin to my WW for HPs. Do you also add pure lead to soften them?
