Ive go a post 64 Model 94 and Im casting the Lee c309 170f boolit for it. The alloy is half ww and half pure lead, powder I have is IMR 4198. Any one use this combo? Good results for deer? Im thinking 22 grains, what have you guys tried?

Should work okay but you probably should start around 18 gr. and work up. Best accuracy from my Savage 340 using H4198 with boolits in that weight range came in around 19-20 grains (1900 fps +/-).

A lot depends on your bore, lead, and chamber dimensions. With the faster powders they produce pressures faster which requires a closer boolit fit. The closer your boolit fits these dimensions the more powder and pressure your boolit will handle to shoot more accurately. This also generally speaking goes hand in hand with the hardness of the boolit. JMO and my experience with the faster powders the above post is in the ball park for suggestion. Try the high teens in grains and work up 1/2 grain at a time.

This was the first bullet & powder combination I used in a '94 .30-30 more than twenty-five years ago. Results were very good with an alloy approximating Lyman #2. Sized bullets to .309" or .310" and used 22 grains IMR4198. According to some old notes, muzzle velocity was 1,800 fps.

I had best results with 19.5 grains of 4198, but abandoned that load when I used up that can due to metering difficulties.

If you can find it try 30.5 grains IMR 4064. I use that load with that boolit in my 336 with ballard rifling. 1.5 inchs at 100yards.

Amen! I load 19 gr. of IMR 4198 behind the Lee 170gr as my all around 30-30 plinking load. Sized .310" and cast of wheelweights it works in three different rifles, two 94's and 30A.

Edit: I water drop my bullets.
