thanks guys. I have sorely missed the 3 no dash s I have owed in the past. a 586 6in, 686 4 in and a 686 2 1/2 in round butt lew Horton special and the snub shot better than the other two .and they both shot great. with this 3 s&w I started first casting my own boolets and more dumb luck than skill, as every thing shot very well. I think buying large lots of powder in 16 and 20 pound drums and I got a deal on 50,000 small primers helped to keep me on track. I am very happy to have a go once more. also the wife's birthday is only 3 days behind mine and she misses her 4 in 686 no dash as well, so I will need to go shopping for hers next. all so I have been adding some ar 500 steel targets to on my range I have a 1- 10 3 -8 1-5 and 1 -3 1/2 hangers on chains and want to add a table for some steel bowling pins and knock over punisher skulls. fun in the sun with guns as I did not get the car port put up in front of the range, as we start day 9 with 100+ and to think this is much better than last year

The L frame Smiths are great guns. Overall, they aren't much larger than a K-frame but they are far stronger. One of the best shooting .357 magnums I ever owned was a 4" 681.
Enjoy your "new" time machine and remember that you don't need a DeLorean to go back to the 1980's :bigsmyl2:

I have the 686 no dash in 6 inch.I got it new when I was 21 in 1983.then I got a 586-3 with the 8 3/8 barrel.in the late 80s.the 686 never shot as well as the 586.i never knew why until a few years ago when I started casting.the 868 has the thread choke at the frame.had some bad leading problems.did some fire lapping and the 686 now shoots great.the 586 was my deer gun for many years.both have givein my many years of great service.i have seen several no dashes for sale over the years and sure thought about picking one up.i think if I do it will be a 4 inch. time machine lol sent me back to 20/20 vision!!! Enjoy the the new to you piece

Propwash47, you will simply love that baby. See if it has the "M" stamped inside the frame where the yoke has the serial #. If it is there, it has been back for the modification. I have a 6" 686 no dash and the darned thing thinks it's a rifle.

that is what some folks call a Texas carbine and no doubt the second photo proves the point and is what has drawn me back to one of the best shooting S&W ever made.

"Texas carbine", I love it. I bought that gun at a ridiculously low price because some nit wit had drilled and tapped a hole just forward of the regular screw holes, BUT the scope mount covered it up very nicely, plus at 67 yrs of age the sights were a little blured. I had no idea it was such a great shooter but it shoots anything I stick in it like a rifle, or a "carbine". The 586 would probably shoot just as well, but it's so puurty I aint touchin' it!! BTW, that target is shot @ 40 yds in stead of the 25 yd line

It shoots these 158 gr boolits from one of Tom's Accurate molds as well as anything else I ever shot and my K-38(1956) shoots them even better. When you get yours, you probably cannot pick a bad combination.

murf205 you relay got to wonder what some folks where thinking, but it worked out good for you with a good price. and 40yards is just getting started to stretch its legs . if you find a place with the right layout you can hit small to medium size targets at ranges that must be seen to believed. toms molds are superb ,you cast some nice boolets there . back in the day we where casting H&G 150 Keith swc with 3 driving bands and they shot lights out at any range with all 4 S&W we had then 2-686s ,586 and 581

It's a #160H from Accurate molds, a 3 cavity Aluminum. A work of Tom's art, for sure. They chrono 1225 ave from my 4" 586. As I cast them, they weigh around 155 grs. I have a 150 gr Keith style mold from Lyman and it shoots the 13.6 gr load into the same group as these boolits. In fact I can interchange them and the group is the same size, more or less.

Propwashp47, You might want to try another combination I have had good luck with in my 686. It's a 180 gr gas checked LBT boolit in a Keith type. The powder is 2400 with a CCI std primer. I don't remember the exact charge but it is not a max load and has a firm crimp. It actually shoots better in my 686 than anything else I've tried but as you already know these guns shoot darned near any combo well. If I were going to hunt these Alabama whitetails in the thick stuff(where most of them are), and the shots were under 100yds, this is the boolit I would use.

As mentioned, look for the M indicating its been back to the factory for a new FP bushing. The no dash and -1's were "recalled". Symptoms are light prime strikes. (IIRC).

I sold off an 8-3/8" 686 no dash and wish I never did. I've since added a 586 and is supurb.

$200---damit boy. I'd still be crying. You are not alone in the mourning of lost deals. I bought my 586 for $400 and the guy that sold it to me had a Winchester lever action 25/35 in about 95% condition with a perfect bore for another $400(with a perfect, full, box of old ammo). I hesitated about 30 seconds, just long enough for a guy standing there to plunk down 4 $100 bills. Lesson learned.
Keep plugging, brother. We are waiting for pics when you score.
