Friday I received my Hornady LNL Shellplate #14 and that was the last thing I needed to start reloading 45-70 for my Guide Gun. I don't have any boolits or bullets but I turned the remaining factory fodder (about 30-35 rounds) into brass yesterday. All the people pinging steel with their fancy AR-15s, me included with my Service Rifle. Those big slow bullets from the .45-70 hit them with a little more authority though. Also hit my shoulder with some authority. The 300 grainers at 1800fps were definitely a little more potent than the 405 cowboy loads at 1100. I don't doubt those heavy cast boolits could be used for something other than shooting targets though. Got about 35 pieces of brass sized and primed ready for my mentorship with Swamp.

I've shot about seven or eight deer the last four years with a few different 45-70s using 405g bullets traveling around 1350-1400fps and have yet to get one back. No matter the angle the bullet zips right on through. I must be getting old or something but I like shooting guns that only kill on one end.

I hear you there . I don't mind recoil but it's like a fight. If I can avoid it I will.
