I've looked & searched but I need a Hollywood press operator to enlighten me.

On a Hollywood Senior Turret press,

What is the hex screw & nut that is sticking up on the end of the link arm that goes thru the shaft that the handle goes into for?

On some presses the hex bolt & nut are on the right, (the left link arm ends just past the handle shaft)

On others, the left side is the same as the right, (extended, drilled & tapped to install the hex bolt & nut)

Thanks

I'm not a mechanical engineer, but I'll give my opinion.

I believe it, they, if you have a right and a left as shown, is a stop device when set up for swaging, a failsafe.

With the linkage using the outer hole for reloading there is no chance of the linkage slipping out from the horizontal ram.

But when you shorten the linkage to the inner hole for swaging you are increasing force dramatically. Now there is a possibility of pulling that linkage arm out through the horizontal ram. So the Allen head bolt acts as a failsafe.

Thanks,

That sounds reasonable.

The odd thing is that mine, with both holes, has an empty hole on the left & the just the screw on the right.
(then again, it's not like like it couldn't have been removed, but it looks like it never had it.)

Mine only has one on the right side, no hole on the left.

Hollywood used the Senior Turret base and linkage set up for not only the Senior Turret Press, but for the Automatics, Progressives, and steel framed TalllBoy SS as well.

There was no consistency whatsoever. As mentioned, there are holes and bolts for both sides or one side. They also made them with the bolt on one side, and the linkage flush on the other side.

Did these changes occur or evolve due to model changes or learned experience? Or due to change of company ownership and the whim of the new owner?

With such little information on the history of Hollywood we may never know for sure.

Fortunately, Tracvision and Pressman have been working on the Hollywood timeline which will answer many questions, though maybe not these, when they release their work.

This Automatic has the left linkage cut flush to the Horizontal Ram.

This Automatic has linkage with holes on both sides but only a bolt on the right side.

I can see that happening when there are multiple machines.

Someone in purchasing/engineering figured out that it was better to make 1 part rather than 2 & just make more to make them more cost effective.

Thanks for the info.

Mine uses a hex screw & nut.

A big thing I left out!

The 5/16(?) cross bolt that goes into the Horizontal ram and through the linkage would have to shear first. Then the "Failsafe" bolt comes into play. Is it REALLY necessary??? I guess it's like an emergency brake on your car.
