Well gents, im beginning my journey into casting for rifles. My first efforts will be directed at a marlin 30/30 rifle. My question is how hard should my boolits be for velocities in the 1800-2100 fps range? I was thinking about 15bhn or so . I will be powdercoating these boolits also. Oh, the boolit is the lee c309-170f. I plan on shooting deer at fairly close ranges but still want some expansion at 100yrds too. Any help would be appreciated. Thx

Sounds like a good place to start. If you have a good fitting boolit. I don't powdercoat but I run a compareable boolit to 2000fps at 15ish BHN.

My Husky .30-30 bolt gun loves 40-1 alloy at 1750fps. You shouldn't need anything harder than clip on WW for 2000fps with the proper fit. For reference I push COWW out of my .223 Rem at 2300fps.

Probably AC COWW sized 311 for accuracy, GCd if it's MG.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I mixed two pounds of lino with ten pounds of 9.0bhn lead and cast up some today. When i get home i will test hardness on this batch. Hopefully i will be in the ballpark.
