View Full Version : Choosing a mould
I have a 50 cal muzzeloader. Barrel is a 1-28 twist. The bore measures .500 and the groves are .519 best I can tell. I want a full size conical or spire point bullet mould for it so I can cast my own. Most moulds I have found are flat nose. I am not yet partial to paper patch or grease grove just no more sabots. Any recomendations would be appreciated.

Hi Rio,
Welcome to the board. You'll enjoy the company here.
I suggest you buy a box of these:

If they shoot well for you, get the mold:

Take care, Tom
thanks, Dad actually has that mould. I hadn't thought of using it. I will give it a try. Wish I could mold something like the Horandy sst or the Parker ballistic extreme. Both shoot good in sabot form through my rifle just expensive and I am trying to get rid of sabots.
I will give it a try.
Was thinking about this but not as pointed as I would like

Rio, How about using sabots and molding your own boolits to fit them? Use any boolit you want. I think that with your twist, you wont be happy with the maxi-ball.

I've shot Maxi balls in fast twist guns with excellent results. It's slow twist guns that won't shoot them well.

i am currently shooting cast with sabots, but some of the matches I want to shoot require speed. As the gun gets hot the sabot accuracy goes south around shot 8-9 one match I need to be able to shoot 15 shots in 45 min at 500 yards.

Cool the barrel like others have 150 years ago. WATER or PEE will work Yuck I prefer the water myself. 45 minute relay you have plenty of time IMHO
