Looking at one at a Pawn shop, wood is very good metal is good no rust, all is correct except the rear sight, the bore is good with sharp land. They have it priced at $499 I have been looking on all the internet sights and this seems to be a good price. What do you think?

Frank, the price is not bad. I collect them myself check the wood to make sure their are no cracks by the action. I would jump on it if I was you.

If it is complete with solid stock and good bore, that is a very good price. The lock plate will likely be dated 1863 or 1864 as they were made from surplus Civil Ware musket parts. If repairs are needed to the lock, parts are not hard to find. A big bonus.

Are you sure it is a M1866? Pawn shops don't know much about these rifles and they often get the models wrong. Just be sure of what it is.

That's still a good price for a good condition Trapdoor of any vintage. Are the cartouches legible on the stock?

The gun should have a 1963 or 1864 on the lockplate and by a 50/70

The 1866 is still made up from musket parts but is great for the 50-70. Starting with the Model of 1868, the Armory went to receivers made specifically for the barrels. when they used up all the musket barrels, they started making them specifically for the 50.

I have an 1866 barrelled action that I put into different wood and enjoy it a lot. Black powder and lead, lots of fun and it is easy to see what a huge step the cartridge loading made over loading from the muzzle.

Looks like a good shooter. Not to take anything away from it, but the stock appears to have been heavily sanded. It also has an odd extra band in place of the nose cap. But those are minor. Load up some black powder and the Lee 515450 bullet and have a blast!

not real familiar with trapdoors and not a serious collector if it punches holes good enough [smilie=w:

Frank, my brother shot up some ammo he'd purchased from a commercial reloader and gave me the cases for clean up and reloading to the specs we'd worked up. Went to trim the cases to length, I have the necessary pilot, but they wouldn't fit in the chuck of my Lyman Universal trimmer. Nutz. Guess I'll skip that step and move on to thinking about another issue to be resolved. Stay tuned. :veryconfu

John she is a little about 1/2" to the right of POA with the five rounds I got with the rifle, will wait to do anything as I will not be shooting it with what it was loaded with. Trailboss is what they were loaded with I will not use anything but Black Powder in it and am waiting on dies shell holder, cases and mold. Take care and thanks to all
