I've got a .40-70 2-1/4 BN Shiloh Sharps I bought new 25 years ago. It shoots just fine with FG Goex and a 370gr PP bullet, just a hair over an inch at 100 yards. That's about as good as my aging eyes can see.

But after all these years, I'd like to try a little smokeless in it. I've got a couple pounds of Accurate 5744 I've had for many years and thought I'd give it a try in this rifle. I know that not many shoot this cartridge, but maybe someone out there has one and can share their experience? If not 5744, what other smokeless powder works well in this cartridge? I'm not looking for a hunting load, just a pleasant 100 yard target load.
Thanks Steve

I have a LoneStar rolling block chambered in .40 2 1/4" SBN. I have used 5744 in it..I'm at work and don't have my notes but I will let you know.

Finally got a chance to dig it up. I haven't shot this rifle in quite awhile and found a box of rounds loaded with increasing charges of AA5744..and my last notes state more testing needed..so I guess I haven't arrived at best load yet. Here is what I have: Bullet is a Leeth nose-pour copy of the Ideal/Lyman 412263 @ 300grs. with 20-1 lead-tin alloy. .410 dia.. .032" fiber wad, 22.0-24.0grs. AA 5744. Notes say
1 1/4" group at 100yds...not sure which charge.
NEI .40-330gr. 20-1, .409 dia. ( I had to size this longer one to .409 in order to still contact rifling leade and close block). .032" fiber wad, 24grs. AA 5744 grouped 1 5/8" with 4 in 7/8"..again notes state more testing needed. Wads are in firm contact with bullet base. Hope this helps.

Thanks, yes that gives me a starting point. What velocities where you getting with these? That's darn good accuracy. With my aging eyes, i'd be quite satisfied.
