I have started casting Lyman 429421 boolits for my 44's. Puma 44 mag. 629 and colt clone 44 spc.

I have loaded a few of these and shot them through both pistols and they shoot great.

Is there anything I can do to the Puma to get the 429421 boolit, to function through the action, when the boolits are seated to the crip groove. I have heard of people loading the bullet farther into the case and crimping over the front driving band, but I would like to have one length load for both the 629 and the Puma and not have to worry about seperat load for each gun.

Thanks

Try the Leverguns forum, they had a sticky on modifying the lifter for longer shells. The only problem I see is doing this without lsoing the ability to shoot shorter shells. My Rossi 44 feeds both regular 44 mags and 44 specials with no problems. My buddy's 454 won't feed 45 colts worth a hoot. we had to shim the ctg stop on the back of the lifter to get it to feed. If you are only going to shoot one load there would be no problem.

Are you saying they won't function now, or have you tried them?

I had a Rossi that wouldn't feed the 429421 when crimped in the crimp groove. I crimped them "on" the front drive band and shot them in my SBH also. You could trim the brass shorter and accomplish the same thing

Scrounger, The OAL it too long to feed. The round comes out of the mag tube and onto the lifter. It just doesn't come out far enough and the nose of the bullet hangs on the mag tube.

txbirdman, I might have to try crimping on the drive band. I would rather not trim the cases if I can avoid it.

I had mixed success with RCBS 44-250-K (which is real close to 429421), mainly running into feed problems like you are. I ended up going with a group buy mould that makes a 295 grain WFP with three crimp grooves. The nice thing is that since the Rossi's tend to have slightly oversize bores (from what I've read here anyway--never slugged mine), this bullet is much more accurate. It drops from the mould at about .435" and I size it to .434.

If I used .44 special brass, my Keith bullets worked fine but I wanted to use mag brass.

Shorten your brass or use 44 Spcl brass (with 44 spcl loads). You need the crimp in the groove so that the rounds don't go back in the case when the gun is fired with heavy loads. Been there with my Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. I now use 44 spcl brass with that bullet and switched to the 429215 with mag brass

If you believe that the plain bases bullet will limit you to about 1400 FPS (I do), then the .44 Special case will give you all the powder room you need with appropriate powders.

I have an older Rossi with the ugly "Tigre" medallion on the side. It feeds them fine. Watch that the front band is not oversized and that when you size the band gets into the die. I have seen a few 429421 molds and know that they are not all created equal. Some have a band much larger in diameter than the body. You may want to swap with somebody with a smaller front drive band that doesn't shoot a lever yet. Gianni

Had the same problem with a Lee 310 gr boolit in a Ruger 44 Carbine. The OAL was just a tad too much. The Lee Factory Crimp Die will set that crimp where you want it - groove be damned. If you don't have one I really recommend them. Just wish they made one for the 480. :-D
