I have a 1911 45 ACP I reluctantly acquired from my son in a trade; he wanted a 10/22 I had but didn't want to pay cash. It is a pistol he built from parts he had on hand and I can't even tell you what brand it is. I shoot it with the Lee 230 RN boolit with "reasonable" accuracy and it feeds just fine. What I am looking for is a SWC that will reliably chamber and shoot in my unmodified gun. Are there any out there?

I have been using the Lee 200gr swc from the 6 cavity in all my 1911s. I do not have issues in any of them. If you load them too short you will probably have issues depending on what magazine is in the gun. They like to 3point bind if the feed lips release too soon.. I love the accuracy I get 1.5 in at 25yards and nice clean holes..

I have made and shot for a good many years the Lyman #452460 semi wadcutter that would drop from my 4 gang mold at about 204 gr. using my alloy. It feeds reliably in several other stock .45`s besides mine with no trouble feeding.Robert

You might consider a full weight TC (truncated cone) design. You get the SWC flat nose without the feed stopping shoulder.

The Lee 200 grain SWC and the H&G 68 both work very well for me. I'd pick the Lee 6 cavity for my own uses if I couldn't have both. Harles

452460 Lyman for me. Feeds well and is accurate.

I second the Lyman 460 design. It has always fed and shot great in all my 45's.
I size to .4525 and fill the bottom grove with lube. No leading and great accuracy.
Give em a shot you might enjoy it.
Let me know if you would like to try a handful I will send some to you.

About 500,000,000,000,000,000 200 grain H&G #68 mold boolits, and/or the derivatives have been shot successfully out of a bazillion 1911s in the last 50 years. It's a pretty likely candidate.

452460 and 231.

either the #68 or 452450 works well for me - but I have changed to now using the 230 TC for my cast
and plated RN for thru my suppressor.

I also like Lee's 230 Gr Truncated cone and they feed reliably in my .45.

I use 200gr SWC's that I bought from Zcast years ago. All my 1911's love them. All I know is they were made on Magma machines.

H&G 68

This is the one! The H&G 68 design gives you the best chance for success of any and the NOE molds are second to none.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm leaning toward the truncated cone at the moment but I'm also considering the H&G 68.

Lyman #452460 has been my go to slug for over 50 years and at least a half dozen Colt .45's. Pushed by 4.8 grains of Bullseye, I have found this to be a reliable and accurate round that feeds very well and doesn't beat up guns or shooter.

The H&G #68 clones are the best

I use both the lee tl230 tc and the 200 swc (standard groove version) powder coated in my RIA. Both shoot extremely well(sub 4" at 25 yards off hand). I shoot more of the 200, because it saves lead and shoots well over only 4 grains of red dot. Economy matters these days.

I use the Lyman 452630 200 gr SWC in CZ97B and Colt 1911. Mine cast .454 and I size to .452. Never had a function issue with the 97B or 1911. Both weapons try to put then in one hole but I don't let them.

This has been stated many times over the years. The H&G #68 is a 200 gr. SWC whose "nose strike in the chamber is the same as the original ball ammo" is the best designed SWC to feed in the 1911 that there is. It also shoots extremely well in those 1911's (and S&W Model 25's and 625's) at all reasonable ranges. It cuts a clean hole in the target paper leading to the best scores possible. It is also a dandy edible small game bullet.

In short, it is THE bullet for handloading the .45 ACP. My version is the Mihec correct copy and I have shot thousands of them. "Back in the day" I shot tens of thousands of original H&G molded bullets (#68). Records have been set at Camp Perry for years.

There are a lot of "pretenders" out there (the Lee comes to mind) but they do not have those critical dimensions that feed so well. Mihec moulds as well as NOE's moulds are correct copies and their molds are second to none.

When I want a full weight bullet with decent terminal effect that also loads quickly with full moon clips in revolvers, then I call on the Lee TC (I prefer the normal lube groove).

Totally agree Dale53. What are your charges of BE, 231 and TG for target and full power?

Groo here
BUY a bag of Rainner,Berry,Speer etc 200gr SWC bullets [ the long nose ones]
Load so that the cartridge is flush with the hood [ the thing that sticks out on top of the barrel]
by setting the bullet long and seating deeper till the base is flush.
Check to see if the shell will fit the mag [it should]
Load some to same length and shoot.
If they jam , make oal SHORTER till they feed.
If all is well get a mold that is the same or similar and "Be Happy"
If not the next thing would be TC, after that a RNFP and last a lighter RN.

I am happy with the H&G #68 design. I am using a Saeco 4 cavity mould, and have no issues with it.

Now, if only I could shoot straight! LOL.

If I could have only one - it would be the H&G 68 or a good clone. Just the way it is.

The 1911 will feed many different SWC designs. I'm inclined towards the lighter bullets. My personal favorite is the Accurate 45-185HB, but I've shot both Penn and Dardas 150 grain SWC with complete satisfaction. I prefer the SWC for reloading the .45 as you have a nice visual indication of seating depth. Have fun.

The Lyman 460 or HG68 both work well for me, but my 2 guns shoot the Lee 200 rnfp better at long distance (over 50 yds).

Wayne Dobbs;
I just saw your post above. My current target load for both revolvers and the 1911 is the Mihec correct copy of the #68 H&G bullet ahead of 4.0 grs. of Bullseye or Titegroup (currently using Titegroup). I have used 231 in the past with excellent results (use a chronograph to give the same velocity as the Bullseye or Titegroup). A heavy load using #68 is 7.0 grs of Unique.

I load like this (headspacing on the bullets):
