Of the big three ferrous mold makers, who's boolit design is best for the highest velocities in .30 cal? I'm looking for varmint-like accuracy with enough meplat to cleanly dispatch up to porcupine sized critters out to 150 yards or so.

.................Hmmmmmm, probably the Lyman 311407. You didn't say it had to be current production :-)

I agree with Buckshot on the 311407. I have great luck with the RCBS 165 gr. silhouette but it might not have enough meplat.

You might check with Waksupi as he lives where the porcupines roam. I don't know if people shoot them except for in a survival situation.

Something on the order of an LBT LFN.

But you can make one that mimics that yourself on Mountain Molds Site and save say $40 over the LBT cost.

For factory molds a Loverin probably what the guys mentioned.

The Saeco 307 a 190 gr FL shoots pretty good in my 03A3, I've had it up to about 2150 with good results at 100.

It look alot like 311407 just longer.

I like the 311466 Lyman, pure linotype, sized .301 and patched up with 16lb paper. Lube is BAC.

Back in the dim past, I remember reading that the Lyman 311465 (125 grain) could be shot faster with accuracy than any other. Prolly read this in an earily Handloader and IIRC, Veral Smith was the author. -JDL

Another" Yeah" for 311407and SAECO 307, --add SAECO 311305 if slight O'size is appropr. and SAECO 301(nee RG-4) if small meplat is deemed enuff... Onceabull

JDL, I think Molly did the article in Handloader many moons ago. Seems like he concluded that low sectional density allowed near factory velocity with good accuracy. I think he used the 225438 as well.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Time to do some more homework.

P.S. Hey what's going on here?... Lyman stopped offering .30 cal. Loverin designs!

Humm... hi velosity in a cast bullet..

Well, since you are limiting yurself to 150 yds, and yu want to shoot some poor old porke-pine,, how about Lyman,s 311041, gascheck, at about 2100 fps, from ww metal, water cooled, annealed nose, hand lubed, with a Lyman slip on gascheck.

Seat it just into the lands.

Powder,, off the top of my head, I'd go with 4895 if yu are using a 30-06 case, or 2400 or 4759 in a little case like a 3030.

..................I see Lyman also discontinued the 150gr 7mm Loverin too!

Maybe I should buy a 323470 while they are still available! Too bad I don't own a .32 cal (or 8mm) rifle so lets go to the next rung on my ladder.

I've tried SAECO 399 in my .35's and can't get the accuracy I'm looking for so what about SAECO 352? I've got SAECO 354 but the gas check shank is too short and its diameter is undersized so I don't cast with it much... I was actually thinking about sending 354 back to SAECO. I've got RCBS 35-200 but I would prefer to keep bullet weight as low as possible; besides, I don't need much of an excuse to buy a new mold. :)

So the question is: how does SAECO 356 group and can you push it pretty hard?

All the Loverin style are going away, darnit. I could always get them to shoot better than "bore riders".

If I was Mountain Molds, I be figuring out how to cut them. Perhaps Loverin styles are "Cherry-only" propositions.
