View Full Version : 6 mm Wildcat
I have a rifle chambered in 6mmx225 Winchester and can find very few loads for the cartridge.
I know that the water capacity of the 225 Winchester and the 25 Remington cases are nearly the same (225=41 grs of water, 25 Remington=42 grs of water) and the bullet weights for 6mm and 25 caliber are similar.
My question is: would you think it safe to use 25 Remington load data in the 6mmx225 Winchester, assuming like or near like bullet weights?

I have a Winslow 6mm X 225 Winchester and use this data: It's probably out of date for most people but I've got lots of old powder.

6mm-225 (P.O. Ackley Data) Reloading Data
Warning! Notes: Standard twist: 10". Special twist: 12". This cartridge is made by simply necking up the new .225 Winchester to 6mm. The so-called Improved 6mm-30-30 has been a very successful cartridge, but being quite similar to the .225 Winchester is much more practical to use the new .225 case and simply neck it up. The 6mm-225 is an exceptionally good cartridge for the Model 99 Savage lever action and for the single-shot actions. The following loads were checked out in a single-shot rifle with a 26" barrel and the maximum loads listed may be too hot for some other rifles. (Handbook for Shooters & Reloaders/Vol. 2 - P.O. Ackley, 1966) NOTE: USE THIS DATA WITH EXTREME CAUTION

I don't think so! Even if the case capacity and bullet weights are the same the bore size would cause less pressure in the larger bore. The best approach in my opinion would be to use a Prowley Computer (OLD school) or quickload to get a starting load. Whatever you do, PLEASE err on the side of caution!

What type of rifle?
I would compare a few more cartridges before I started. The .25-35 Winchester comes to mind, plus anything else that is close. Then I would start with the heaviest bullet you plan to use, once it has maxed out go to the next lighter projectile.
One thing you have going for you is that there is data out there for this round, it just takes a bit of searching to find it.
Be cautious, don't just blindly use data from unknown sources.

Compare sectional densities rather than bullet weight. Also look at 225 Win data.
The rifle is an 1885 Winchester ; I am not "adventurous" when it comes to injuring either the rifle or myself.

The 6mm JDJ is yet another version of the 6mm-225 Winchester. Which version do you have? The 225 Win. is a varmint caliber in the same class as the 220 Swift, and the 22-250 Rem.
Having looked at the 6mm JDJ and the loaded cartridges that I got with the rifle I conclude, now, that my rifle is chambered for the 6mmx225 Ackley.

Take Ackley's data very cautiously. In some instances his lowest loads are overloads. The above data uses current powders but be aware that these are maximum loads for a single shot. Personally, I would drop them 15% to 20% and work up. Accuracy is seldom found at the highest pressure/velocity anyway,
