Hi Everyone.
I'm thinking of purchasing a lead only target barrel in 44-40 for an Encore. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Barrel length, twist (using 200 grain lead bullet), blue or stainless steel, manufacturer, black powder only, etc, etc. Thanks!
Bob

44-40 for an Encore Bob

I am flailing about with my 23" 41 Mag barrel. The number of 410 diameter moulds is not as much as the .429 diameter.

I dunno what the current .44-40 brass will limit you to for loads, but it should be a hoot for 1200fps (assuming rifle length!)

With Starline brass in a strong actioned .44-40 rifle 1700 fps with a 200-grain bullet is a no brainer.

Hi Everyone,
Still looking for an Encore 44-40 rifle barrel. If you know of someone making a nice barrel, other than T/C, let me know. Thanks. Bob

1200 fps is just about the black powder pressure and velocity out of a 24-26" barrel, and should be good out to about 200 yards or so, with a 200 grain boolit, and a 1-36" twist. I know that seems slow, but it works. If you want to shoot much heavier bullets, you might need a faster twist, although some folks have reported good results with a 240 grain pill.

If you want more performance than that, IMO, you'd be better off with a .44 mag.

Thanks everyone,
I'm stuck on the 44-40. I know it's an older cartridge but it's just what I want. Keep any info coming, I sure do appreciate it. I will try MGM for the barrel. Thanks again. Bob

I love it, it's what I shoot in matches, both pistol and rifle, in both black powder and smokeless.
