I have a German Drilling in 16x16x what appears to be 9.3x72R.

I'm pretty sure it's not a 9.3x74 because my Cerrosafe cast didn't show a shoulder. http://ammoguide.com/cgi-bin/ai.cgi?sn=pgeQPEpRtc&catid=420

It COULD be an 8.8x72R, but I just can't get a definitive answer.

The castof the lands & grooves is right for a 9.3x72R, with an 8.8mm land (stamped on the barrel) and a proper .365 groove.

However, since it is a straight wall, my Cerrosafe doesn't give me a good view to the actual chamber/case/leade dimensions.

Does anyone know where I could find out how much leade there would normally be between the case mouth and start of the riflng?

According to my Hondloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions there is a 9.3 x 70R and 9.3 x 72R, both are straight wall cartridges with a bullet diameter of .365 and a rim diater of .482.
Case lengths are 2.75 and 2.84 respectively, while the head diameter is .427 on both. Rims are .06 and .056 respectively. Unfortunately there isn't a lead drawn or dimensioned in the book. Hope this helps you out. Also there is a caution, "Do not confuse with 9.3 x 74R Sauer."

The 9.3 x 72R Sauer is a bottle necked cartridge with a rim diater if .510 and head diameter of .473 with a rim thickness of .047.

... Case lengths are 2.75 and 2.84 respectively, ...
Here's my problem. From my Cerrosafe cast I measude 3.32" from the inside of the head (only measurable point from a chamber fill) to the first measurable point where a Land is visible.

Which means squat as far as I can tell.

3.32-2.85+.051 (rim thickness) = .521 - which seems awfully long for ogive protrusion + Leade...

But maybe I'm off base...

I've had these thirty-five 9.3x72Rs laying around for some time and have no need for them. They are RWS factory loads and appear to be 2 different loads; 34 of one and 1 appears different as it has a larger driving band and a different ogive. I've layed one of each load on the caliper which is set at 3.32". Any other measurements I can do?

What I am reading in the HM of CC is they used a 286 grain bullet and their source for reloading info is JJD, which is the initials of the author. He gives the 9.3 x 73R as brass to make the 9.3 x 70R from and says the 9.3 x 72R is factory available. I suspect the bullet would be rather long but havent been able to look it up yet. Seems reasonable that there would be a fairly long lead for the bullet, at least IMHO. Oh yeah, they show 39 grains of BL-C2 I'd look up some bullets, especially solids to see if it all made sense.
Good luck.

Bless you Larry.

You wouldn't happen to be wanting to part with some/all of those would you?

I know we're working a deal on the PM side but I was just noticing the size of those primers. These may not be boxer primed, do you want me to pull one and see?

No, that's OK. I'm not so much looking to be able to reload them as to pull one myself, shoot a couple if they look safe, and keep the rest with the gun.

A gun without ammo is useless. ;)

I've got a couple of those 9.3X72R's and you can still get fresh Norma brass that is boxer primed if you look around a bit. It's about like a 38-55 powerwise.
