I have a leading issue in my Ruger 45LC. Its leading most of the length of the barrel. My bullets are from WW and its the Lee mold 255 gr bullet. I have sized them .451, .452. I slugged the cylinder last night and they measure .450. Ideas?

Throats need to be opened up. It's not hard if you have a reamer and pilots. If you don't want to do it yourself, go to a good pistol smith. Or, you could send your cylinder to the cylinder smith: www.cylindersmith.com. One way or the other the throats need to be opened upened up.

I agree with Sundog. You can size them whatever diameter but the cylinder will size them .450. Thats too small for the bore and that results in leading.

If I have any revolvers that need to be throated, off they go to Cylindersmith. For that price it wouldn't pay me to try myself (+ I would need to get a reamer for each caliber - no brainer for me, Cylindersmith).

Have you checked the bore diameter? I bought one of the early .45 "New" Model Blackhawks in 1974. The bore on that example slugged at a tight .450" - actually closer to .449". Back then, I didn't know to check cyl. throats too, so I can't state that dimension. I'm guessing that they were way oversized, because my BH didn't lead the bore so much as it spit a whole lot of lead from the bbl./cyl. gap.

I had old-style Pacific reloading dies meant for .454" bullets, so my resized .450" slugs wouldn't stay in the case with even moderate recoil.

I've heard about other fellows who have .45 BHs with both .450" bores and cyl. throats who have fine results with .450-.451" sized bullets.

Just got 2 45ACP/45COLT ruger cylinders back from Cylindersmith, excellent quality work, reasonable price and 1 week turn around time.

My OM Ruger blackhawk barrel slugged .4525 and both cylinders were .450. Cylindersmith only has .4525 cylinder reamer. The .4525 reaming will work far better than .450 cylinders.

Question...

Why didn't Ruger make the damn cylinders the proper diameters? Why is it put on the customer?

I'd send your receipt from Cylindersmith to Ruger and ask for a payment on the work they failed to do.

Cylindersmith did my 45 Blackhawk too.
It went from only shooting well with full power+P loads, to one of the most accurate handguns I own. WELL worth the money he charges.

I have to ditto Swagerman's question. My experience soured me on Rugers for a long time. They are a fine company, but why all the booboos with cyl. throat/bore diameters? Ruger is usually very quick to correct other such things.

Had my 45 Colt cylinder done by Cylindersmith several years ago. Good price and fast service.

When you open up the cylinder polish the forcing cone too, they are usually rougher than a cob.

Ruger thinks they are within specs. They theorize that sizing should happen at the throat to ensure the bullet will be sized for the barrel. They just ignore the fact that it doesn't occur that way. Gianni
