I pulled these from their site.
These use some serious charges for a modern sharps presumably!
I always thiught what if you just used the slowest powder and just fill the case like blackpowder, how would it go??

Waters' Pet Loads discusses the use of slow powders like 4831 in cartridges like the .45-70. The loads don't completely fill the case, but in straight cases in large calibers the powder burns slowly enough so the pressure is kept down. This way, a double charge situation is avoided, as is the possibility of the usual small pinch of fast powder failing to ignite or giving a hangfire.

I've used such loads in my .45-70 Sharps carbine and they've been pretty accurate and mild. Apparently, something of the same sort can be done with the .50-140. Be sure to blow the unburned powder out of the barrel between shots.

where can I find this kind of data for my shiloh 50-90??

I wonder how it would go with a caseful of 5010 powder and 425grn ??

5744 would still burn more completely?

thanks

Those rounds were made for black.. It works good and has for well over 100 years..
Use black powder.

I have shot a few 50-140 loads in the past and can tell you that the recoil in a sharps pattern rifle is brutal when the 700 + gn bullet goes down the barrel at 2000 + fps ,, Blaack is the only way to enjoy these rifles for sure,,,,,,,,,,,,Dean

I had a Shiloh Farmingdail Sharps in 50-140 several years ago. I only shot it with black and a 450 gr Lee boolit. The rifle kicked me so hard that I only could shoot three accurate shots per session without starting to flinch uncontrolably. I decided that I did not need the power so had it rebarreled to to 45-90 where it did good work at long range target shooting. I got talked into selling it a year or two ago and am now sorry I yeilded to temptation and sold it.

If I wanted to load 50-140 with smokless i would just buy a .50 cal Barrett. I shoot a 50-90 with black only (it's an original Remington RB with a new barrel), weighs 16#, and throws a 650gr boolit.....and that's enough for me.

Actually, using the SPG primer as a guide,I have loaded 50/90 BP loads for my hartford shiloh, using the Rapine bullet [450grn],and even though it did kick like a 12ga magnum and twisted about in recoil,I did manage that 4" group@200yds benched on the first outing.
I`m not crazy about any 90grn case in a less than 12 pound rifle.

Go over to shilohrifle.com/forums and look around for bobw. I shoot with Bob at Quigley...he's using a 10 pound+ 50/140 with 500+ grain paper patch boolits and doing pretty good. He scares off the rattlesnakes and clears the dust off the firing line when he pulls the trigger on that bad boy...also runs off the more timid shooters and those who don't care for muzzle blast...to his unconcealed delight!

I shoot a 13+ pound 50/90 SHILOH SHARPS with a 34 inch barrel and a recoil reducer in the butt stock. With a 620 grain boolit and 95 grains of GOEX Cartridge, that's enough fun for me.
