I've got a question for the experienced caster out there ....
I just picked up a Herters 45230 mold, and poured about 50 boolits. Everything looks good but these only weigh out at 192-193 grains, does this sound right?
Thanks
Scott

Herters numbers don't always mean what you think ?
Is this a RN that duplicates Mil Ball ammo and should be near 230 gr ?
Or is it a SWC ?
Maybe ole' George tried copying the H&G 68 ?

It's the round nose.... I just tried a few more with a different batch of lead and they are much closer to the 230 mark.
Now I have to figure out what sort of alloy mix I have here.

mono/stereo-type probably.
@40 grains is 20% ish lighter, that's a lot of something in the alloy.

Please explain "mono/stereo-type "

There are several alloys that older printing machines use.

Also, I wonder if your 'light' alloy is solder ? 50-50 ?

50/50 or 40/60 solder would be about the right weight.
tin is about half the weight of lead.

IIRC these ingots were made from about a half dozen old lead hammers that I had when I was tool maker. That was in the late 80s to early 90s.
I guess I need to find some soft lead and start mixing, I have about 10lbs of this stuff.

I purchased some range lead, not sure what this hard stuff is but with the alloy I received I had to mix it at about 3.5# of range lead to .5# of the mystery alloy (LINO/MONO).
The above mentioned mix gave me a bullet that matched up weight wise with one that was made from some 92-5-3
