This holiday has a special meaning to me. My 4th great grandfather enlisted in the Summer of 1776, or at least that's what his pension papers stated that were dated 1832.

He was a minuteman. He would serve for several months at a time and then go back to his farm. He served under Henry Lee and was given a field commission to 2nd Lt during the war.

Just wanted to share a little of my family history. He's the one started our military history in my family. Pretty much all the men in my family served including me being a disabled veteran and my wife currently serving. We've had someone serve in every single war our great country has seen.

And keep your situational awareness about you when you are out in crowds today, especially at fireworks shows. Let the spirit of independence in free people be celebrated and let us continue to stand guard over what has been protected by those who went before us. We define who we are by our behaviors and the character we exhibit. Have fun and enjoy ourselves.....while being vigilant.
