View Full Version : Got a big score but need to cut it down

I had this dropped off to me by a friend that knows I'm always in search of lead. Most of it isn't to bad to deal with but one chunk is nearly an inch thick and 3 feet long by 1 1/2 feet wide. I cut it half using a hand saw to make it manageable to move but will need to cut it a few more times to be able to smelt it. I don't have a chain saw or saws all on hand, is there a better option than the hand saw that I'm not thinking of?

torch will work too.
or pound it round and melt it in your pot.

If it's pure [it looks like it] you could send a big chunk of it to me for further study.

I can probably get my hands on a circular saw. I'm not sure about the ax, I took a couple of shots at it with a pick for curiosity sakes and wasn't much impressed.

Got air? I chopped up a pile of 1" thick ballast plates with an air chisel.

Got 8 pints of coors light but no friends with my same lead obsession. Nabbed a circular saw from work though.

like jsnover said, air chisel. just chisel down through the lead, sorta like perforation, like tearing apart postage stamps
wow! that's a lot of friggin lead!

Does the fire department in your town have a "jaws of life?" Does a rookie need practice with said device?

Go by, or give 'em a call. Let them cut your lead. It's good practice on the tool. I've done it, though I have an in. I'm retired from the job.

You can cut it with a brick chisel and a fairly heavy hammer too.

I used a saws-all reciprocating saw one time. The lead was a bit thinner.

DO NOT USE A TORCH OF ANY KIND!!!! seriously, using a torch produces lead vapors BIG TIME! a torch flame is way over 800/1000 degrees. You breath those fumes and you are f#@ked!!
