Is there any benefit to having an adjustable gas plug on the M1a?
And, what is the best way to add a picatinny rail to my M1a without breaking the bank?

The adjustable or modified components for an M1A/M14 gas system are all designed to reduce gas pressure against the gas piston by venting some of the gas out the gas cylinder plug. Of course this would be the wrong course of action for shooting cast boolits. To get more gas into the gas cylinder to operate lower pressure loads you would need to enlarge the gas port in the barrel and its matching hole in the piston.

You might try an add on scope mount with the Picitiny rib. They screw onto the left side of the M1A/M14 receiver with (sometimes) a second screw going into the clip guide.

Are you having issues with it?

I shoot cast without issue in a Scout Squad.

As for the picatinny rail, put it where the front sling mount goes. Use a 2 point mount.
