View Full Version : Newb tackling a first time casting of .32 ACP hollow point?

I have never casted before but I can't find a bullet that I want. It's for .32 ACP and I would like it to be about 60 grains, 0.315" in diameter and hollow point. The bullet would be like a .32 ACP FP but with a hollow point. I have a Lee heater, RCBS Lube-A-Matic and some lead but nothing else. Is this too ambitious of a project? If not, how do I proceed?

Tom at Accurate Molds can make you one. Not sure why you want a hollow point though.

You will have difficulty getting reliable expansion at .32 ACP velocities and once you do, you will lose penetration.
Better to go with a heavier flat-nosed bullet with as large a meplat as will feed. This bullet is similar to the one loaded by Buffalo Bore, which will give good results.

I don't want the bullet for expansion. This is strictly for accuracy in precision shooting or Bullseye. The bullet shown above is what I had in mind but hollow point to reduce the weight. I'm hoping it would be closer to 60 grains. The 60 grain SWC bullet I'm using now doesn't allow the cartridge to chamber properly in my Pardini target pistol. The Hornady XTP 60 gr. bullet works well but is jacketed, expensive and often hard to find. I would like the same thing in just lead.

I use a 77 grain mold from Magma Engineering to cast bullets for the 32 Auto. If I remember correctly the bullet weight with the Number 2 alloy is 77 grains.
This mold is used with a Master Caster.

Any idea or estimate how much the bullet would weigh as a hollow point?

Tom does not offer his molds in hollow point, so you would have to send them off to be modified. Cost to modify blocks to an inset bar HP conversion runs about $50 per cavity, or about $200 for a 4-cavity gang mold. If all you want is a lighter bullet, consider Tom's other lighter designs suitable for target shooting for the .32 ACP and you can buy a 5- or 6-cavity gang mold for about the same cost as having a 4-cavity mold you already had modified for an HP. I'm not sure why you are hung up on a light 60-65-grain bullet, a standard weight bullet of 74-77 grains will function the gun with a lighter load and reduced recoil impulse.

I shoot an 87-grain bullet in my .32 ACPs. Not a Pardini, but a custom Beretta.

I have no idea on the weight as a hollow point. One of my sons wife has a small Berretta in 32 auto and I make the bullets for that gun only.

Try this guy he may know. Eric converts molds to hollow point.

Actually, I don't need a hollow point bullet. I'm just trying to duplicate a proven bullet design in the Hornady XTP except in cast lead. I really want to stay close to the 60 grain weight though. With the alternate designs above, can the weights be estimated?

Edit: I see now the approximate weights on Accurate's website catalog.

FYI - The 31-060A bullet above is the one that doesn't chamber correctly on my gun because it rests on the shoulder.

The way to fix this is when you order the mold, specify "tolerance negative" on the forepart, then indicate the MAXIMUM as-cast diameter which the forepart of the bullet can be, which should be 0.001" LESS than the measurement of a pound cast. The bullet will then drop in and feed without resistance. You will need to specify the alloy used. Bullet shown is a heavier 114-grain for the .32-20, .32 H&R Mag and .32 S&W Long, but illustrates the idea. You could specify a .311 front band to enter the throat, and .314 driving bands to fit your groove diameter and shorten the nose to the shape you want, etc.

Beeser, Accurate mold 31-065H is a copy of the Hornady XTP bullet with out the hollowpoint. Send the mold to Eric at Hollow point molds and with the hollowpoint the bullet will weigh 60 gr and be a lead copy of that bullet except that it will be 0.315 diameter. I have shoot this bullet in my Pardini HP and it fits the chamber just like the XTP.

The boolit drawing two posts above looks like a bore rider. Super similar to the last noe group buy in 9mm. Gauge interest in it over in the group buy discussion. You could then maybe have it done with both still pins, flat point and hollowpoint. Not exactly an XTP, but looks nice.

Mi hec ran a group buy on a 32 acp hp.
