Having tried out paper patched .45 pistol molds in a percussion rifle fitted to use .458 diameter boolits

has made me consider perhaps having a .41-.42 bore to use patched .41 mag molds. Thinking a 22" twist would be plenty quick.
Any yall tried paper patching yet with pistol molds?
.38's?
.41's?
.44's?

yes, had a .45 1/48 twist hawken thompson side lock once. paperpatched a resized 250 grain pistol bullets and they shot 1 inch groups at 100 yards. they will work fine as long as the bullets length matches the twist of rifle barrel. my favorite paper patch rifle could use a pistol bullet as it is a 45 cal 1/30 twist. what i do shoot is a 335 grain kieth nose like yours cupped based bullet. i made it 1/30 twist so i would never shoot a bullet above the 335 grain. it is a off hand gun and weighs less than most side locks. easy to point, easy to carry and shoots dead on target every time. if you want to shoot a 250 grain .45 paperpatched bullet accurate at any range a 1/36 twist would be best. it still would be a very good deer getter as you could shoot the bullet 1500 to 1700 ft per second. their is no reason you couldnt have barrels made for the smaller cal. pistol bullets. just make sure the twist matches the length of the bullet. a too fast of a twist and they will gyro out at about 50 to 75 yards. before i knew all this many years ago i had a rifle like that. about every 3rd or 4th bullet would take a sudden right turn at about 50 to 75 yards. was shooting accross a pond one day with the light just right and saw the bullet do that. took a hard right turn. was spinning too fast for its length. i also have a side lock .50 cal in 1/28 twist. i shoot a 535 grain bullet in that one which is small for some 50 cal fast twist shooters. i didnt want a bullet bigger than that. it also is very very accurate and reaches way out their. i use the oregon rifle barrel co. as they give me the bore and twist i want. go for it and have fun.

The .458 works great with lubed 45-70 molds and paper patched revolver boolits.
Think I'd like to get something that would use all those .41 molds too.

I'm in research and development on a fast twist .36 right now (1-14) I tried a few PP .357 and they worked OK, but before I got a load down, I have now switched to trying full formed 9.3 bullets. I had a load worked up for 100 grn .311 in a sabot (at 100 yards I was impressed) I made a sort of false muzzle bullet starter from 1-3/4 delrin rod. It doesn't have a FM, but I use it as a sort of slap starter and FF right in the barrel for the 9.3 (the bore is .about .363 land to land with about ~.004 groove)

Wow. That sounds like a mini-Volunteer.
What's your barrel length?
You're trying lubed lead now?

barrel length is 28" built on an allen inline action 142237 142238 its a prototype test rifle, stock is a reworked and bedded knight american. finish on all is spray on bedliner. It took me the first few range days to fine tune the action and work a lot of bugs out, so it really hasnt been shot a lot yet. now its almost 90f here, so I dont do a lot of shooting in the summer. I just sweat too much to keep things dry. I was getting under 2" at 100 yards with hornady 100 grn .311 xtp in an MMP sabot over 20 grn Schutzen. I tried up to 30 grn (about 1490 fps with a magnetospeed at the barrel) but it tightened up with slower charges. the 9.3 i have are jacketed for experiment. And a big leap to 280 grn. If they work, i might get a mold and try some cast. finding factory bullets is spotty for the odd size. its just a range toy now, but if I can get it working Id like it for coyote and varminting

barrel in a 3/4 oct Oregon. theres a thread on the build on another forum http://www.modernmuzzleloader.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=26443&hilit=allen+inline+build
