Well, wife and I hve been looking for new home ever since we finally sold home in MS. We have small house in decent neighborhood here, but it is small, in town, no room for us to add decent shop, and definitely no place to shoot. Located and made low offer on home that can answer all of the above. Seller countered higher than we wanted to spend but after talking for a week, reoffered his final price. He accepted today, so it looks like we will soon have location we can put a small pistol range in. The 3 acres is surrounded by Plenty of land on all sides, large hill in rear that is overshoot stop, no one on that side of property for over a mile. Just a few cows to watch for. Anyone have perfect backstop plans they want to share?

Congratulations on the new place! Is it in Arkansas?

The best back stop is dirt, a big pile of it. On our private pistol range we use tires. Think 24 ply equipment tires off of mining equipment. Occasionally they throw a bullet back at you! Not very fast or hard, but it will get your attention! I like dirt better, but the tires are wider than the dirt pile and are for the occasional wild/wide shot. For target holders, we use a frame made from landscape timbers. They are cheap and easy to drill and bolt together.

Welcome to Arkansas. I just use a large (5 yards) pile of sand, in front of one of clay. Septic installer delivered the truck loads. Target holders are H.D. metal fence stakes with 1/8" wire rope strung between. Cardboard backers lain over the wire. Easy setup and removal for inspecting targets.

I'm hoping to have an improved backstop later this summer. They are doing ditch work along my road and I'm going to get them to dump the dirt along my treeline instead of hauling it away.

Yep, I'm still going to be in NWA. Just trying to get back out in the woods a bit. Will most probably do RR ties with dirt berm in front. Have seen several built that way.

I caution the use of RR ties as they can and will bounce one back if things are right... Track hoe and build a range like the NRA plans or others on the internet. The side wings of dirt look and do good. Yes it costs money but its better than a incident with a wide shot getting away. Good fences make good neighbors is a old saying .

I hired a D-6 cat and had the driver blade a 10 foot high dirt berm. It helped that the spot I did it at the back of the property had a slope and the cat leveled out the pistol range and the dirt was enough to build the 10 ft. berm. It was a 40 yard pistol range. Ran me about 500 bucks for the cat work.

Mine's just a big pile of dirt. Political signs make great target holders.

My rifle and pistol ranges are in the bowl created by gravel mining the hill for it over the last 60 odd years. The back stop is about 35 feet high on 3 sides, just in case there is a wild high shot! Have had our "County Mounties" use my range while they argued with the county for a private range of their own.Robert

Didn't explain myself well enough, this would be in back of dirt pile, mainly as support and final stop if needed, yep big dirt pile needed

A friend has one made of railroad/bridge ties. It works great but too many people put the targets in the same place and it doesn't take long to shoot a pretty big hole in them. My dream was to live in the country but at 61 not likely to happen due to the fact I like being debt free and houses in the country around here are sky high. Anyway, if I did one I wold make a bullet catcher so I could recover the lead. Only makes sense to me.

Yeah the land stop here is stupid expensive. Property next to this house has been listed at $10k an acre for 30 acre plot. A large ravine slices down thru it (comes out of the lake behind new house) rendering about 3 or 4 of those acres useless. Other prices are even higher.....my land in MS is Worth maybe $5k an acre tops.....and that would be for frontage.... I'm taking out pretty good mortgage but I don't want to wait any longer. I can get paid bf I retire.. And yes will set up to be able to mine most of the lead.
