I did a small job for a buddy. He gave me 8 pounds of H450 yes I have not seen this for years. Is this a good powder?

I burned up a pound of it in the very early 1990's in 30-06. I got it free from Hodgdon in some kind of promotion. It seemed to work fine but I switched to IMR 4350 and never looked back.

I remember it worked well in my 6mm, but not as well as Winchester 760. Still, 8 pounds of it is a good deal.

I used to use it for my 300 magnum.. I think it's more along the lines of 4831..

Yes, it does have a burn rate near H4831.

The 6mm Rem likes 48 gr with a 85 gr bullet and 47 gr with a 100 gr.

The 6mm Rem Mag, also likes it with 140's.

I've heard that near to full case loads in the '06 is a accurate load but, I would stay away from M1 loading with it. It could bend the operating rod.

I like H450, meters better than any other powder in my RCBS powder thrower. I was gifted a couple pounds and use it in cartridges where you would use H4831. My 25-06 really likes it, if they still made it I would buy some more. GP

220 grain j's in 30-06 bolt
175 grain j's in 7mm mauser
any weight bullet in 25-06 or 25-284

all sub moa, better accuracy than retumbo or varget in these guns. Similar to I4350 or Rx19.

Lee's book even lists some cast loads.

Yes, too slow. You risk bending the op rod. Look to powders closer to 4895, 4064, etc.

it's replacement is rl-19.
I have a jug of H-450 here and use rl-19 data when I can't find anything in my older books.
4831 is close but not quite close enough.

the 450 looks a lot like AA-3100.
I remember it had a tendency to act up under certain circumstances, but was THE powder in some cases.

I think I remember the slow 852 as using 4831 data. [which would put it right where 3100 is]

accurate used to make DATA powder available which I'm sure was gov. contract over runs.
I also have a jug of data#9 here and I just use accurates data for #9 without issue.

someone had to make the stuff [powder manufacturer] and I don't see them doing a special run of almost this or that, but doing a run of something [normal] that is huge [and shoulda been canister this] but had small variations because of price, sheer volume, and batch processing variations.

I've always considered WC852 to be H4831 speed.

I have both powders (WC852 & H450) and I'm just about to rechamber my High Wall from 30/40 to 30/40 Imp (30 deg shoulder). When I get that done, I'll chrono them together and report back.

I have been slowly picking and poking at the H-450 in my 303 brit rifles.
it may be that they don't like the powder or the bullet I'm using.
but the one is a very accurate rifle when fed the right diet, so far it plain out won't shoot the bullet that the argies and the 7.7 will shoot incredibly well.

no big deal I always got the 25-06's to burn it up in.

Seem to remember way back that 450 had some unexpected pressure problems and everyone steered clear of it. Anybody else old as me? Still have a few pounds of it and used to use a lot of it in the "overbore" rounds.

I remember there were some situations where it would spike pressures suddenly.
I can't remember for sure what those situations were.
but I know it happened, and they dropped the powder.
