Checking fit. Front ring of the Krag stuck in the hole. About airtight!

The beginning mill cuts made. Out for check fit.

Almost done. Just a few little touches here and there.

Here it is with the action stuck in it. Fitting the lug on the nut to the recess on the bottom of the action.

This is how far the action stick in the nut. You can see the lug extending back along the action bottom.

The action in place. The slots have been milled in for the binding screws. Still have to cut a slot so the binding screws can pull the nut up tight to the action ring. The front action rings vary by about .005" OD so I figured having the nut able to cinch up a bit would be good.

A fine job, Buckshot, and well reported. I guess I will have to take the Norge 6.8X55 to Oopsbooms to compare details of manufacture. One of those might be the ticket when I get set to rebarrel it.

Buckshot,
The tool looks great!
I'm stripping the two guns and waiting for the tool to arrive.
I've been wanting to sling lead through those two Krags for a while but the bores are just in too bad a shape.
One gets a two groove Springfield barrel and the other gets a four groove.

..........Hey John. I tried slitting the top of the nut Friday AM when I got home from work, before going to bed. I had a .125" wide HSS rotary blade so got it and the nut all set up to cut and proceeded to blow up the blade, ha! The thing squeeled and sounded like hell form the very first. Made one very shallow pass and said to heck with this. If the bandsaw won't cut it, it ain't getting split!

I'll bet if these nuts are made from 4140 it's in the annealed state and hardened afterwards! If I make any more I'll use 12L14, you betcha. I guess you can see from the photo's that I altered the design a bit further by leaving those cheeks on the nut to also bear on the flats just behind the action ring.

............Urny, you been over to Powderburner's to, ah touch his new Mo-sheen? He's had it awile now. Maybe you can get him to crank one out. I really honestly do recommend regular old HR, CR, or 12L14 for the nut. Using hardened 4140 was plain dumb. I have 3-4 bits to sharpen, busted an endmil and burned up a 3/16" HSS slitting saw. I make myself feel better by figureing it as an education, which in fact it really was. A real learning experience.

I have not, and am feeling a little guilty about it to boot. I've done little since NCBS '05 except work on my neglected place, and need to make up for that pretty shortly. I did get to cast some boolits last week from a couple of leased molds, sure felt good. Onceabull's 375248 did right well, and I have some set aside in the order cast to send to him, but Oopsbooms brass mold gave me no joy. Only had one boolit that I can even measure, .294" on the base band and .276" on the nose just ahead of the top band. Strange size.
