OK so it's new to me. 150-xxxxx serial, nice shape, good lockup. Holster wear on blueing at end of barrel but very nice otherwise, GREAT trigger! Has 4" barrel.

Paid $300 from another local --- think I did all right? <GRIN>

Yea ya' done good. Whenever I see one my first reaction is "man that thing is built about 10x stronger that it needs to be."

Warms my heart to see them still out there and at a very good price. I'm still putting a couple hundred rounds a week through mine.

You got the blued steel. Big thumbs up.
The rifling geometry is way much better than the stainless.

Mine was purchased new in 1972. Good shooter with a lot of rounds and still tight as new. You made a good buy!

Good sturdy basic gun. I still have my Police Service Six 4" blue. 38 Special I built when I went through armourer's school in 1985.

One of the best revolvers ever made IMHO !
I would say you did very well.

The 150 serial number prefix indicates an early production model (1972-1974) and the grips for those models are slightly different. No big deal, just keep that in mind if you ever decide to buy grips for it.

When Ruger decided to get into the DA revolver market they really put their best effort into the project. I've often considered the Six series 38/357 revolvers to be the size of the S&W K-frames with the strength of the L-frames. S&W was well entrenched at the time but Ruger went toe to toe with S&W and turned out a fine product. Competition is a GOOD thing!

The 4" 38/357 revolver is one of the most useful firearms ever invented. Small enough to be easily carried, big enough to be easy to shoot. They are extremely accurate, reliable and durable. Inexpensive to feed and capable of shooting a wide variety of projectiles to meet the needs of the job at hand. If I could only have one handgun the 4", medium frame, DA .357 magnum revolver would be it and if I could choose the make & model; it would be a Ruger Six series !!!

The big difference Petrol seems to be the slanted blackstrap - going downhill from the hammer. Some reviews said this makes the 150-xxxxx series harder to hold onto under recoil but others say not. With what the revolver market is doing ($$$$$$$$$) I don't think any of mine are for sale anymore.

Normally people want way more than they're worth, but once in a great while I get lucky...

There's nothing wrong with the early grip frames, they're just different from the others.
In my foolish past I let a few Service-Six's get away from me. You could almost always find a good used Service-Six for sale for less than a S&W. When I came to my senses and started seeking replacements, the secret was out and the great deals of the past were gone. I found replacements, learned my lesson and I'll never let those Rugers go.
I'm still looking for a stainless Speed-Six but like you said, people now want way more than they're worth.

Enjoy your "New" Ruger !!!

Love those Sixes! I'm the proud second owner of a 1988 Service Six.

I bought a six inch Security Six after I got back from Desert Storm and still have it. If I had to pick one handgun to keep, it would be the one, can't think of any pistol I'd rather have in my hands if things got ugly. It's very well worn, but the action is smooth and it always goes "Bang". Definitely as accurate as I am with most handguns. I wish Ruger still made them.

I'm another big fan. The bad news is that Ruger will no longer work on these fine revolvers and has exhausted the supply of parts. If I were a young man(I'm not), I would buy a couple of these in at least fair condition for spare parts.

as others have said it is a first model security-six. I would jump on it for that price just for the collection.
I have a 4" stainless steel security-six made in 1976. it would be last hand gun I would get rid of. the next to last would be my 6" security-six.

Fortunately they don't break very often and there were a lot made, about 1.5 million. But I agree with your thinking.

The fact that functioning, well made DA revolvers produced in the early 1900's can still be found is somewhat comforting. Given some care, most well made firearms will last a lifetime; sometimes longer.

Buying a parts gun is a lot like buying a parts car. It's not much good to anyone else but it is comforting to the owner to know that there are at least some spare parts available.

This is the first I have heard of there being a difference in the rifling. Could y'all please educate me?

And I have a late (86 IIRC) stainless 4" Security Six, and carry it on duty still. Get some looks, but the people who talk trash tend to get real quiet real quick when qualification time comes around.

I've got a decent SS 6" in stainless, I really enjoy it. I'm also interested in the difference in rifling

The new GP-100 Match Champion is a step in the right direction. Hopefully they will eventually offer it with adjustable sights.

FergusonTO35,

Ruger already offers a version of the Match Champion with adjustable sights. My local gun store has one of each.

You did fine on that purchase. I am weak when it comes to the Ruger Six-series. I am smaller than then average male standing at 5' 6". These guns fit my grip well and offer balance that works for me. All in .357 Magnum, I have 3 SS Security-Sixes, 2 blued Speed-Sixes and 1 SS Speed-Six, and 1 Police Service-Six. They are rock solid and smooth. Ever turn them loose??? Nawwwwww. These will be passed on to my great grandchildren
