A good friend who lives in Alice, TX, near Corpus Christi, may need some work done on an older Remington 760, including either relining the barrel (if that's possible) or replacing it.

The next nearest big town is San Antonio, about 2 hours away.

Are there any recommendations for good 'smiths in the south Texas area?

Thank you,
Richard

Remington discontinued the 760 in 1981. On their website they list private vendors who specialize in parts for many discontinued Remington products. Contacting a factory authorized service provider will be the best place to start. These are usually gunsmiths who perform warranty work on Remington products and offer their services to the public as well.

If your friend can find someone to work on his rifle, unfortunately he may spend more than the gun's value. A rifle smith is so specialized in making and repairing precision/target/high grade rifles that he most likely would not touch a 760.

Lightload is correct.
I'm a riflesmith, and I wouldn't advise relining that barrel when there are much less expensive options out there.

If you are taking suggestions, my #1 advice is to send the barrel off to JES reboring and turn your bad situation into a blessing by having him turn it into a 35Whelen, or 358 Winchester, or whatever is one caliber larger than what you've got. Money very well spent in my opinion!

If the owner doesn't care for that suggestion, my second piece of advice would be to get on ebay and type in "Remington 760 barrel".
