Does anyone happen to have a load they have used in the .30-40 Krag for the NOE .311 247 grain boolit? I have a bunch of these I use for my 300 Blackout, and I'm thinking if they'll stabilize, they should be a lot of fun. While I'm sure I can safely experiment with Trailboss and some of the more "universal" Unique loads, I would like to push the boolit a little faster. I'm hoping I can get it closer to 1800-2000 fps with the proper powder.

Thank you for any tips!

I've shot it with 16grs 2400 to try out. Slight tipping at that velocity but my rifle has a really bad bore. You might try Glen Fryxel's article on cast bullets in the Krag:

Doesn't discuss this bullet but it has a lot of good information that should get you going in the right direction.

Thank you. I'm shooting a like new bore in a Browning 1895, so I'm hoping they might stabilize.

Anyone else have experience with the Krag and the 247 grain bullet or ran it through Quickload? I have some slower powders like Rx19 and H4350.

I have had excellent results with sr-4759 and imr4198 with a Layman 311284 that drops around 220 grs. sized .311 smalltuft of dacron.

There was a problem with that bullet in my Krag. .300 nose, and most of my Krag rifles have a .301 bore diameter. Not all, but the majority. In between runs at NOE, demand for the mold was high, so it went on ebay. I did shoot a few out of the single .300 groove diameter Krag that I have. I didn't get a chance to chronograph it, but it shoot pretty good with a caseful of that inexpensive W860 surplus under it. I'd guess the velocity to be in the range you're looking for.

Thank you for the input. I haven't had much time to get to the range, and with the summer heat and humidity, not so sure I want to be out there anyway.

I loaded up a few of the 247 grain bullets this evening with Unique, and intend to try them out at the indoor range this weekend. It's only a 25 yard range, but I don't have time to make it to a longer range where I can get a better feel for accuracy, bullet stability, and speed.

The long bullet gave me a little bit of trouble when seating. Despite my best efforts, they had a tendency to get slightly tilted going into the case. I'm using Lee dies, and I can't help but wonder if a guided seater die like Hornady makes might fix this issue.

The magazine on my 1895 is plenty long enough to contain the .30-40 Krag with the 247 grain bullet, but loading them can get a little awkward due to the 1895's special loading operation. I ended up going with an overall length of 3.135". I'll report back with my results.

Well, that didn't go so hot. The Unique load didn't work out for me. Bullets were tipping at 25 yards.

MadsenShooter, I'll be trying out something like your load next. I have some WC872 on the way, and I think I will see what a caseful of it can do. Got plenty of SR4759 too, so I'll test that one too. It may not be until fall though, when it's cooler and I can get outside with my chronograph. Between work, garden, and wife, there isn't a whole lot of time. When I have had time lately, I go shoot some .32 Short Colt out of my 1892 Marlin at the indoor range. The stock sights on it are pretty terrible, but I hope to remedy them soon with a set of MVA combination sights.
