I've delved a little into Martini lore, and I see there is a goodly number of extractors for it. Where is a source or reference that illustrates and identifies the various extractor versions? Looking for a replacement for a somewhat butchered one.

Look on Atlanta Cutlery site in parts section they show the ones for different models.

(Specify Caliber) uh, what calibers did the rifle that the MkII extractor is for come with? Must surf...

Almost all of the markings on the side of the action are filed then buffed off. I can make out 1886, and that's all I can be sure of. The rifle's action has been disassembled to work on the extractor, and I don't know where they are right now. Will know fer sure either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. Looks to be orriginally chambered in the .45 / .577 or whatever (not the .405 Enfield).

Excluding the possibility of earlier marks used in developing the cartridge, only the MkIV could have been originally chambered for the .402 cartridge. Any Martini-Henry action could have made the .577 to .303 transition, but most that did were MkIII, and a smaller number MkII. I think most of the actions made for .303 (a minority of the rifles which existed in that chambering) were to the MkII design. It is even possible that a given .303 Martini had first a Martini-Metford barrel, and then Martini-Enfield. Not to mention what civilian gunmakers and individuals may have done... There is nothing wrong with a Martini fitted with a Lee barrel, if the work is good, for no improvement in strength was made or needed.

Is there any real difference in the three extractors? (Mk II, II, IV)? I see the solid forward part, a slightly slotted, and the fully slotted. Are these all swappable?

Thinking without alcohol, a way to modify extractors might be machining off the extractor hooks, then installing a replacement "U", weld it in place... I saw a rather poor attempt to build up the "ears" on an extractor, rather crude and requires work to get it useable...

Yes. Extractors will fit in the action, but not function properly. You need the correct extractor for the model. Learned from experience with a Model IV that someone had previously put a wrong extractor in.
