During the Texas rain, I got kinda bored, so I decided to mess around The Berm (my reloading room). I was so inspired by the Dixie Triball and those hog rounds by Hevishot, that I decided to work up a little something.

I don't have my .600 cal ball mold yet, but I do have a box of .45 round balls to play with.
This is what I came up with:
How's this

-5 .45 cal lead balls totaling 1.47 oz.
-3.5 in steel shot wad from BPI totaling 1.63 oz.
-with buffer added totaling 1.73 oz

All that sitting on top of 36 gr of Blue Dot in a 3.5 inch Federal hull and a Fed 209A primer. I found data for Blue Dot using a 2 oz payload so I'm a little under that.

Just some ideals. What say ye?

Seem how it patterns and be sure to recover the wad and balls.
Look at wad for evidence of erosion of balls through bore.
Look at balls for evidence of flattening in the wad or bore, and for impact.
Of course, check for pattern and penetration.

Just looking at it makes my shoulder hurt. Have fun with that.

When you say "a box of round balls" sounds like soft lead/muzzle loader balls. Dixie slugs specifically calls for hard cast balls due to deformation from setback. There are warnings on here against using soft lead in loads like this.

I casted them using reclaimed shot and they've been water hardened. They don't even deny when u drop them on concrete, unlike my lee slugs.

I wish to see a report on this, sir. I have some .45 balls myself and want to see what to expect before I load them in my 12... Well, my buckshot is not the exactly.45 but close enough. 5 of the makes 1 1/4oz in my scale. I shoot them by the pair in my judge. Please update....

Those gas seals are kinda iffy pushing big loads. I can't remember if it was a 28 ga or 20 ga card fits under the seal, held with a spot of glue, but it firms things up. I suspect a blown gas seal if you don't do that. I loaded some .375 balls like that and they're awesome.

I ordered a Lee 2 cavity .38 round ball mold so I could give #0000 Buck a try . Think I'll try an alloy of half WW and half Lino .

I think i need to get in this buckshot arms race. How about (2) .69 cal RBs in a 3.5" 10ga hull?:bigsmyl2:

I only read the post to see how many .45 round balls would fit in a 12 ga. I was also curious as to what the designation for them would be? 000000? Then I saw and was reminded about the new monster 3.5" shells. I am from the days when a 12 ga was 2 3/4" long.

OK, the gauntlet has been thrown down. Ima get me a punt gun and load it with 1" round balls. So there!

HT was right. Gas seals blown. I've since moved on to the Tri Ball load modeled after Dixie slugs.

I checked the "rules" and a punt gun is legal in this contest only if fired offhand.:-P

BT, put a 20 ga card in the concave base (next to the powder) of the wads with a spot of hot glue and try them again. Maybe back off the charge a couple of grains. It's worth the effort.

I have used 9 45cal lead balls in the 4 bore brass case,

they lay 3 to the layer perfectly... About 2.65 oz, 1150 gr.

Over 2200 fps. Ed

I still have a couple hundred I was about to melt down. I've ordered some 20 ga cork and nitro cards. Maybe I'll revisit this project.
