I am a newb to casting.

I have been getting ready to PC handgun boolits, but I got impatient this weekend and PC'ed some 170gr flatpoint .30 cals that I intend on shooting in my dads pre '64 30-30.

After PCing, I read that PCed boolits tend to be less accurate that traditionally lubed boolits. Is that true? Should I smelt these back down?

Figures, I spent a few hours cleaning the stanky, nasty lube from the lube sizer.

That depends on your definition of accurate.

Most reports are a 2 inch or tighter grouping at 100 yards

But a lot of that is your load and skill at shooting.

I say load em and shoot em.

I don't think it's going to affect your 30-30 nearly as much as say, a .270
Load em and have fun. 'Prolly shoot great! My 30-30 loves PC. :D

I've posted a group before, I'm getting consistent 1" groups from the 30-30 in a savage 340 with PC. This gun will shoot .75 with 125gr jacketed at 2400fps. Your gun may not be up to the task, but everyone's definition of accurate is different. For hunting and plinking, I think you'll find them accurate enough.

Good! This will pretty much be a plinker rifle all around.

Now... to GC or no GC? I suppose the only way to find out is to go shooting with both.

Whether to GC or not will depend on your velocity expectations and if the boolit has a GC shank to fit one. Generally, if my boolit is made for a GC, I use one.

Same here. I've tried using PC GC w/o the GC. Usually end up with crooked seated bullets and sub-par accuracy in bottleneck rifles cases. Straight wall doesn't seem to be affected, seating wise.

My only experience with shooting PCd 30-30 in a Winchester has been a 1975 Winny loaded with a Lee C309-150 RF, gas checked, ASBBDT with color of choice, sized to .311 at about 200 fps. Sized at .309 was ok, but .311 seemed to tighten it up a bit. These were both loads for plinking using Unique powder. I'm sure that using a better powder would help get them below 1" at 100 yards. As a plinker load, I'm happy with that.

So far, powdercoat is a no-go in the NOE 311-165 ranch dog mold I have and my early 70's Marlin. If I crimp at the groove, the dry tumbled PC boolit is hitting the rifling too hard to close the lever easily.

ESPC may be thinner, I'll have to try and see.

ESPC is more uniform and even. You may solve your problems going that route. BBDT can tend to be clumpy and uneven just enough to be possibly causing your problems.

I shoot BBDT and ESPC 30's (Lee molds) in my Win 94 with no problems.

Let us know!

302W: I'm pretty fond of powder coated boolits, I shoot a lot of them in both rifle and handguns. I don't get the smooth finish that I require using the BBDT method on rifle boolits and much prefer to coat them with an electrostatic gun. As always, each gun is going to have it's own likes and dislikes my 30-30 prefers lubed boolits over powder coated ones but not by enough to make me start over and melt the PC'd ones. Shoot them up, have fun and then try something new. Good shooting GP

I used the RD in my marlin with no problem, just didn't crimp at the groove - FCD. As accurate as I can shoot that rifle. Didn't have very good luck with the PB version or sans GC in that rifle. I did push a PB 150 gr. to 1900 in SIL's 308MX with good accuracy but it wasn't the RD design. ESPC GC 170 gr. works fine in my 308W @ 2600 fps.

Popper, would please PM me that 2600 fps load for 308Win.? I'm building a 700 Sendero in .308 and that would be a nice way to go.thanks.
