What is your favorite 45LC boolit loads ?(not heavy magnum )
I just acquired a Ruger 7 1/2" bisley BH.
I only have 2 Lee molds, a 230 TC, and a 255 gr RF.
Today I tried these loads with 255gr RF:
9gr unique, 16gr 5744
15gr 2400, 16gr 2400
6.8gr green dot,
16.1gr 4227, 17.7 gr 4227
I couldnt keep green dot on the paper, 5744 seemed to be accurate, and 15gr 2400 the fun one to shoot.
9 gr unique 'felt' like a +P load.
I need to do more shooting, but what are you guys favorite loads?

My favorite load in my new vaquero is 8.8 gr of Unique and the lee 452-255-RF. It runs about 950 fps or thereabouts.
Its my most accurate load but it's pretty full power.
Ive always considered 8 gr Unique and a 255 gr boolit to be a standard load.

I shot a lot of 10.5 grs. of Unique with a 265 RF, in R-P cases with a Federal standard primer. It ran about 1,100 fps from a 4", and was quite accurate.

I have an OLD lee SC .454 255 RF that I love loaded over 8.5 grains of Unique, OR over 90% case capacity Trail Boss (custom made dipper).

I just follow the published load data for TiteGroup. The maker claims is it NOT position sensitive and with the teeny bit in that big case seems to me they are correct. Very accurate with 200, 220, 255, and 300 gn PC'd slugs.

300gn is my favorite & most accurate boolit out of my carbines.

If you are worried about 2x filled cases, use TraiBoss. It is a nice huge bulky powder that performs excellently in the LC case.

I've shot a lot of 12 or 13 grs of AA5 with the RCBS 270 SAA mould. your 255 rf would also do nicely here. its 1100 ish and shoots better than I can. Great load!

I've been playing with a new 25 and tried 8.5 Unique over a Remington large Primer, very accurate and stout enough. I tried 9.0 grains Unique and same primer and really liked it. Again very accurate.

I found that 7.5 to 8 gr of W231 under a 240ish Keith was a great
load in my Blackhawk for a medium load. This is around 1000 fps and
is above the max for a standard .45 Colt pressure load, but OK for
the Blackhawk. I would not use over 7.1 gr for a Colt SAA or any
of the clones.

8.5 gr of Unique with a 454190 stuffed on top. I use Lyman Alox Starline brass and size to .454 and wheelweight alloy. Wheelweights give the most boolits for the buck and Alox is used because I like the smell.

I've had good success with 15 gr of 2400 too.

I like Lee's 200 grainer with 10.5 grains of unique for smoke and no recoil. My most accurate is Mihec 270 gr with 24gr of H110 which is stout. the lee 300gr GC Bullet is a handful with 24gr of H110 - its accurate but a bit much for me so I'm sticking to 22gr of h110. All Boolits and PC'd.

141013I have two favorites, my Standard 454-190 over 8.0 grains of Unique and a full wadcutter load using the 454-309 over 6.2 grains of Reddot. Load the 309 to a COAL of 1.585 for a very accurate load (The 454-309 is the boolit in the case on the right, the other is a 44 NOE 230 grain button-nose wadcutter on the left, both are loaded with Red Dot , which has proven to be the best choice for accuracy with large wadcutters in the 44 Special and 45 Long Colt cases IME.)

I have one Blackhawk load for my 45 Colt that I like so much it is pretty much all I shoot out of it lately. 20grn IMR-4227 under a 255grn PB RNFP made of water dropped COWW, lubed with Carnuba Red, and primer is standard large pistol. Super accurate load. I'm not sure if that is a Ruger only load or not? But anyway it is the magic load for my 45 Blackhawks.

Just got my Ruger Single Action Lc to day haven't done any checking yet sent six rounds down range and it looks as if the load I was using in Uberti will also work in the Ruger.I was shooting 10.2 grains of HS6 under a 255 grain RFN using Bens Red for lube.I shot 3 to 4 inch group at 50 yards. If I have no leading all I am going to do is some tweaking to try and get alittle smaller group

The load I mentioned ran right around 2" at 50 yds. from my 4" S&W. The last 7-1/2" Blackhawk I loaded for also shot right around 2" at 50, but not all loads did. If you have the LEE 255 RF, it has a good reputation for accuracy, although I have never personally used it.

How is the gun? Throats reasonably sized and at least larger than the bore? Does the barrel have noticeable thread choke at the frame point? Does the trigger stink? All of the above and more will make 50 yd. groups pretty sketchy. Then there is practice and ability. I will say I don't think I have yet fiddled with a Ruger single action that wouldn't do 2" or better at 50 after straightening out any minor manufacturing kinks and developing a good load.

Keep after it, a Bisley BH should be a great shooting gun for you.

Lee 255 with 6.5 grains of Red Dot or Promo is a nice shooting round.

308W isn't 12-13gr AA #5 over a max listed load for the SAA270? I'm shooting 11gr, getting good accuracy, and 900ish fps out of my 7.5in Bisley. In my AA manual this is a max+P load. Shoot Straight, T-Bird

8.0 gr of Unique with most any 250-260 gr bullet does well in my guns, but a better load is 7.2 grs of Win 231. Both chrono at 800+fps in my 4-5/8" Ruger NV and right at 900 fps from a 7-1/2" Colt SAA. Work up to these loads if interested, they're a touch warm. Rod

My favorite load in a Ruger is a 255 gr LSWC behind 22.0 gr H110-very accurate in my gun. Next best is the 250 gr RNFP with a std pressure load of Titegroup-.

I use SNS's 250gr RNFP, coated, for all my .45s. For my RBH 3.75 Vaquero, I like 8.0 Herco. My S&W 625-7, 3", uses 5.5 700x. My Uberti El Patron, 3.5" likes 9.0 IMR 4756. And, 9.0 Herco works well in my Gary Reeder custom conversion.

Lyman 454190 and 5.0 grains of Bullseye. For a bit of smoke-filled fun I substitute 30.0 grains of GOEX 2F for the Bullseye.
Both loads provide minute-of-soda-can enjoyment at 25 yards from my 5-1/2" Uberti Cattleman.

8.2 grains of Unique under an Ideal 454190. Bump it up to 9.0 grains if I carry it for a backup when hunting.

T-bird, I do see where 12.0 and 13 of AA5 is a little hotter than whats in the books, I should have looked before posting, I don't want to steer anyone down the wrong path, good catch, my lot of AA5 must be on the slow side because it has always shot fine for me, cases fall out of the cylinder, but I may not do 13 any more and may even slide down to 11, the cans and the paper I shoot will never know the diff, warm barrels and tight groups!

I took my Bass Outlaw copy (3" chopped barrel 1860 grips no front sight) and put them all on 15x15 paper at 50 ft. Load: 250g Keith with 13g of IMR 4227.

Just started reloading this cartridge but I am liking 6.4 grains of 800x with the Lee 230 grain 452 boolit. Using magnum primers works well for a more thorough burn on this light charge. I load these for a couple of Howell conversions so I keep the charges light. That 230 grain still hits my steel pretty hard though ! Would love to use some unique but I used my last pound on other cartridges. That stuff is hard to find around here.

I do not currently have a .45 Colt but usually loaded with unique. I wasn't getting great accuracy and Lloyd Smale reccomended Power Pistol I can not remember charge weight but PP under 454190 was a big improvement. The revolvers I was shooting were new model vaquaros. FB

It took nearly 30 posts before someone mentioned black powder! That is the one powder that provides the best accuracy for my revolvers. Next up is Unique, between 8 and 9 grains. I use a variety of boolits, WC, SWC, RNFP, but either of the two loads mentioned works in my guns.

Black powder is just too corrosive for me. I shot a lot of black powder in my younger days, and now too old, I guess, to go thru all the cleaning work.
Call me lazy if you have to.

Has anyone tried the newer black powder substitutes?

Either a Lyman 454190 or Lee 255 RF over 8.0 gr of Unique has been my standard load for many years. I've recently found HS-6 does an admiral job too when I run out of Unique.

Most of them ARE corrosive.
Black powder is not.
