I'm working up a load for a 30-223.
32.5 grains of water case capacity.
16" barrel, 1in7" twist.
Single shot.
110gr jacket soft point.
I want to drive this as fast as safely possible.

I tried the powders I use in 300 Blackout but haven't gained much. I think the H110 and 300-MP powders burn too quickly and I can't use the additional case capacity over the BO case.

I also tried H335 and 3031 and they burn too slow.

My son gave me some Accurate 2015 and IMR 4198. Would someone with the QuickLoad program run these and give me the range of charges? I've never used either powder. Otherwise, I'll start at min 223 loads and go from there.

Alternatively, would someone with the QuickLoad program tell me a better powder to use?

Thanks.

In my 7.62 x 40 I use 1680 with good results. I am not sure what the difference is between the cases as far as capacity, but you might look for 7.62 x 40 load data for hints. The 7.62 x 40 is merely a .223/5.56 case shortened to 40mm and necked up. I shoot mostly 125 gr thru 135 gr bullets.

Good idea. What velocity do you get with the 125 gr?

The 300 blackout is 7.62x35 and 30-223 is 7.62x45, so your's falls midway between the two.

QL says 22.1 grs 4198 gives 2376 fps at 3563 psi. Using a seating depth of .308. Using your water capacity numbers, that's a 100% fill of the case.
It says accurate 2015 would fill the case at 23.6 grs, giving a velocity of 1911 fps and 21,816 psi. Probably room for more powder, but I'm not sure how deep you seat your bullets.
I looked up the neck length of the 223 and it shows .203". Using that as seating depth, 2015 shows 25.3 for full case, 21149 fps at 28,269 psi.
4198 shows 23.7 grs fills the case and gives 2310 fps at 36,615 psi using the .203 seating depth.
Hodgdon 4227 shows 23.7 grs to give a 98% fill, and 2480 fps at 46,061 psi. That's pushing the limits pressure wise, not much increase in velocity.

Thanks, Tommag. I'm seating the base of the bullet at the base of the neck.
I'll try those loads and post the results.

Two test shots today:

23.1 gr IMR 4198 = 2123 fps
25.5 gr Accurate 2015 = 2008 fps

This was filled to the base of the neck for both powders.

You might add RL7 to your powders to try. it's close to 4198 but, a shade faster in in most cartridges.

Gday,
I have a .30/222 circa 1974, on a Martini action,12/1 twist ,168g BT ,25grains Win748, or 155g BT, 27.5 Win748. Both jacked target projectiles will run under MOA AT 200yds.I also shoot cast with Unique,PB,700x,and also BP as well.A very versatile little round. Cheers Mal. In AU.
