My dad has gone 17 crazy this year, one of his friends got a 17 HMR and now its what all the "old guys" have to have around here it seems like...at least between the two of them. Talking at lunch with them I was wondering why Ruger never came out with a MKIII or something in 17 Mach 2? I feel like a 10" barrel and a good pistol scope would make great varmint medicine? or was there not enough "umph" for the bullet in the shorter bbl length? Is there more recoil with the mach 2 than a standard .22 LR?? I can't imagine it would abuse the action of a Ruger automatic but I've been wrong before. Just kind of curious why it was never developed or why (what looks like an easy conversion to me) is not offered by anybody it seems like.

According to this article on a Savage semi auto rifle in 17 HMR, the issue is the timing. They had to use a delayed blowback action whereas the Ruger has a straight blowback action IIRC. They would have to redesign the gun.

I doubt there's a big enough market for a 17 mach2 pistol to justify the cost of tooling for an other type of MKIII pistol. As for converting an existing pistol, it would be possible with a different barrel but I imagine the bolt speed / timing issue would require some tuning to make it reliable.

Remember the Mach 2 is based off the 22Lr case, not the 22 Mag.

They did or at least they tried too. First in 04 than in 2010 or 12

The Mach 2 never took off like the HMR and dirty chambers issues were causing problems with blown case heads.
