Here is a head scratcher for ya,
Found an old box of catrages today, I loaded 2 years ago
405 gr Lyman 457193 slugs, made of wheel weights, sized to 457, SPG lube. 62 or 63 grains/weight FFFG Goex. Drop tubed, not sure if had wad or not. If has wad was kind thick, more than 060. Bullet seated with out using a compression die, so bullet compressed powder. Heavy crimp, full length sizing.

Shot against my new load using Lyman 500 gr. 457-125 20:1 alloy, not sized, dropped at 460, SPG lube. 70 gr/ weight FFG Goex, same drop tube, compression die used. 030 wad. Fire formed brass, using neck tension and very light crimp.

The old catrages @ 100 yards one could cover the group with a pop can. The new load, didn't even compare.
With the 20:1 that gun will not shoot those 405's to save your life at 50 yards, the wheel weights shoot great, and sized .003 UNDER bore size.

The gun is a 45-70 Pedersoli Quiggley, 34" bbl, 1:18 twist

Looks like you need to cast your bullets out of wheelweights, and size them to .457.

several things at work here the 3f Powder may have generated just the right pressure curve to obtrate the bullet cast from wheel wieghts. ANother after 2-3 years they may have softened some from aging. Were these the same batch of cases, primers, powder lot. Alot changed with the old load from 2-3 years ago other than just the alloy.
