I know I'm not the only one who likes their beam scales, and I know a good many of you are using the webcam or smart phone trick to eliminate parallax error.

I've now found an even better/easier way to get the same results. With a new free app you can now plug a $5 webcam straight into your tablet or smartphone which makes it very practical and cheap.

The app I use is "camerafi" for android but it's available for a few pennies for Apple users.

You can see it in action on my scales here:

I found it easier to give the balance it's own home. I hung a small bathroom wall cabinet, and keep the balance in it. Doors shut to keep dirt and grit from the balance. The cabinet shields it from wind currents, and keeps things at eye level. The scale is not subject to the bumps the table gets during reloading. No need to mess with the phone (especially if I need to take/make a call).

Great idea. Brownells sells an adapter to mount your cell phone camera to a spotting scope. Should be able to zoom in on it too.

Or one of these: 140047
They're good for lots of things.

I had one of those cell phones once and got rid of it. Now that $79 a month buys me all the reloading stuff I need and I can see my RCBS 10-10 scale easy with my two eyes. No problem. And my wife now comes to the reloading room herself to get me when she used to call me on the phone all the time.

I use the Handy View right-angle prism and stand from Dandy Products. It works great.

"The Handy View consists of a stand, prism, and bumpers on each side of the prism that allow the reloader flexibility in moving the prism for an easy view of the alignment marks on the beam scale, while reloading ammunition."
